Hello. I am looking to get a new camping/all around good survival knife. Two knives i am considering are the Frosts Mora Craftsman Triflex 780 and the Marttiini Big Game Hunter. I would like some recommendations along these lines. I like that the Mora is Carbon steel and has a good hardness. How do these knives compare in terms of holding edge and stuff? I am relatively new to knives. Thanks.

Do a search on our FEEDBACK forum and you will find Botach Tactical is the WORST dealer you could do business with. Do not get seduced by their prices and find your money tied up half of forever in backorder.

The Fallkniven F1 is a proven no-nonsense survival knife. Probably difficult to improve upon. Full details at the manufacturer's site.

Here are two interesting scandinavian alternatives: the handforged carbon steel Roselli Grandfather and Hunter knives. I have the Grandfather knife and it's just perfect.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

The Mora Triflex is a very good knife to start with. You might want to work your way up to more expensive knives later, but the Mora will get the basic work done, certainly for a beginner. The edge will hold up AND it is easy to restore.

Take a look at the Fallkniven H1 also, if you decide to spend more later on. Same construction as the F1 but the blade shape is more like the Roselli Hunter. Bark River also has a long list of excellent knives for camping and survival.

Dagon, do you own the UHC steel version? I'm interested by the Hunter but i would like to know if the price difference between the two versions is justified by a real improvement. Thanks.

dantzk.

I am going to look into the knives that you guys suggested. But i really like the Marttiini Big Game. Is there a considerably difference between that one and the Mora Triflex? The marttiini is stainless and the Mora is 1095 i believe. The knife is meant for light camp use like cutting, light batoning, etc. I guess what i am asking is if the Mora is way better than the Marttiini because i really like the Marttiini.

You might also consider the Helle line of knives, I have a couple of them and they are great work horses as well as being visually appealing. My favorite so far is the Helle Fire, it is a laminated blade, the sheath holds it very well and has a hidden snap so branches and such cannot accidentally undo it. The Helle Fire is also very strong as it is a full tang design. These as well as a fairly complete selection of other Scani knives are available online from places like ragweedforge.com

I have a 780, its a nice knife for the price, really tuff and has good edge holding abilitys but after I resharpened it for some reason it stoped holding a edge. My only guess it that temper was only at the very edge of the blade. My suggestion for a mora would be one of the wood handle ones or the mora 2000.

Although the RAT cutlery knives are out of my price range, they seem really nice. Does anyone here have any experience with Ranger knives? especially the RD7?

And along with my earlier posts, can someone tell me if the Marttiini Big Game is complete crap or not?

From the two knives listed I am going to guess you want to spend about $20 for this knife. I have the Big Game knife from Marttiini, very impressive for an inexpensive stainless knife. The blade is thicker on the Big Game knife than the Moras I have seen. They are not the favorite inexpensive knife around here but a good choice especially if corrosion resistance is a factor.

Cold Steel has some superb kinives that fit your needs. Just be sure to get their carbon steel. Anything in SS from them is a crapshoot.

get one of those wooden handle moras. full tang, and a little thicker spine than regular moras.

no, I have the standard "Grandfather" knife which is already very very nice in my opinion. Meanwhile I ordered 2 of Roselli's cooking knives.
I read only good comments about the UHC versions, and if you plan to use it a LOT then the longer lasting UHC edge may well be worth the price difference, but I also read that they are quite hard to sharpen.

The Marttiini's come with a very nice sheath, for the money, there quit comfortable to use and not bad at all for the $. I like the 780 a lot for a light use knife too.As far as edge holding, Id give that to the mora, but not by a huge margin, after getting them sharp a strop will keep either of them up pretty easily. Neither will take tons of abuse, but both are good slicers.
