Yesterday my mail carrier brought me a new cocobolo Northfield 72. Today she delivered a primitive bone 73.

very cool. is the 72 a lock back? I have a 73 in primitive bone. Sucker is HARD to open with the small match striker pull. Is yours difficult as well?

Both of those are really nice! I'm thinking about picking up one or the other of the #72 or #73 patterns. Can't decide??

Yes, to both. The 72 is a lockback (and quite easy to open), and the 73 is much harder to open.

It is uncharacteristic of me to spend so much at one time. The rule in our household is hobby money out has to be funded by hobby money in. I sold a Pelikan fountain pen from the 1950s to fund these purchases. I bought that pen with honorarium money I received from the family of a good friend whose funeral I conducted. Good traditional knives seemed a much more appropriate memorial to my friend Johnny than did a fountain pen.

I've got a 73 in blood red bone with that same long matchstriker pull, and it's by far the hardest to open of the multiple 73s I own.

I've noticed Longpulls can be difficult openers, probably because the pull is cited much further back than a crescent nail nick I suppose.

Nice detail shots of the thickness of the two knives, real differences there.

The heavy spring of the 73 has already bit me twice (and I haven't even had it two hours!). First, when it paused at the half stop while closing, the tip of the blade found the heel of my palm. Second, while trying to open for some more pictures, it broke the nail on my thumb.

I really like both, but the one in Primitive Bone I like the most...

Congratz to those two extremely beautiful knives... :)

KInd regards
Andi

I think positioning of the nick has something to do with the pull.
If the nick was father up the blade you would have more leverage and be able to open it with more ease. I hope it smooths up for you.

I obviously haven't had much time with it yet, blazerman, but so far I am very impressed. Easy open, secure locking mechanism, no blade play. Though not the scale you are considering, the cocobolo is nicely figured. The slim profile makes it easy to pocket for such a long knife. I really like it.
