I just bought a second 501 at a local gun/knife show today. When I got it home and started comparing it to my other one, I noticed a number of pretty major differences.
Here are the two knives, same side view.
If you notice, the grinds start in different places. The knives are both the same length though, to within about 1mm. The thumb disc is also different. The one is just slotted, whereas the other has a diamond pattern on it.
Here is the slotted disc on top.
Now here is the same view, but the opposite sides.
Now here is a top view of the grinds. Not only do they start in different places, the one is ground almost to a false edge, while the other one maintains a flat surface all the way to the point. You can also see the difference in the angle grind where it starts.
Who can shed a bit of light on this? I didn't realise that there could be so much difference on the same knife. Were these possible hand ground back then? That would account for the huge difference. I'm just curious now.
