2 dot 110 question

I have a 2 dot 110 that I broke the tip off of...about an 8th or more. It just crumbled. Made me so disappointed I couldn't stand to look at the knife.

So I put the knife out in the garage all these years. It's dirty and the brass is corroded. Is it worth sending in for a new blade or should I just regrind it? Throw it out?

You'd have to decide for yourself if it has enough sentimental value to go to the expense and trouble of returning it to Buck. Who knows, Buck might not charge for it, but I wouldn't count on that.

They are inexpensive enough that the cost of having a new blade put in and paying for shipping will go quite aways towards buying a shiny new one.

A 440C steel blade just crumbled??

I can't directly answer your question, but if you can find another old knife and cannibalize the blade. (Send them both in to someone who will do a switch.) That's assuming your handle is in better shape than the one you want to cannibalize.

Or just re-grind and use it. I have 3 old no-dots that are users. Once an old knife goes past a certain amount of use and wear it's not really collectable, but they can make good users.

That's why it's been in the garage for 25 years. :(

Technically the knife would still be under warranty, unless it had been misused in such a way that it damaged the temper of the steel. Perhaps someone from Buck could advise on that.

I have an old no dot, no nail nick 112 that I found in my deceased father in law's stuff. The blade tip had been broken and reshaped. I decided it wasn't worth the time, effort and expense to send it in to Buck to get a new blade.

To find and buy another like it to get a blade out of and have someone change it would cost even more, so no deal for me.

However, there's no sentimental value in the knife for me, the old fart and I never did like each other. ;)

Interesting. I had a 2 dot that was found among my late stepfathers things when we were cleaning out a storage shed. It also had a broken tip, crudely ground to a point. It was open and the blade pocket full of dirt! He even used one of those vibrating marking tools and put his name and SS# on the bolsters.

That was a few years ago when Buck offered blade replacements. I re-profiled the the bolsters, ground the name and SS# off and got a BG-42 blade.

THEN...I recently did a swap with Redrummd and ended up with this:

Eventually, I will engrave it,

I would certainly regrind the blade espically if only an eighth inch was missing . Hey, to have a 440C blade I'd do it for a fourth inch missing . But thats me . DM

Joe, Its quite easy to do on most grinders . It requires bringing the bottom up to meet the top (don't do the reverse), then some reshaping of the belly using a lite touch . I've even done it by hand on a diamond stone when that was all I had . They come out with more belly and I like it better but can easily be messed up too . DM

It's probably in better shape than you think......send it in and Buck will make it like a new knife for you.

Joe-Bob

Here is a knife that brother snapped the end on. Since I had a few others like it, I decided to play with the tip.

Used the diamond hones on a lansky clamp system and played with it about 30 minutes. I kinda liked the curve and never did bother to angle it down anymore. I got a kick out of playing with it.

and all he would ever say about how he did it, was that he was being stupid.

Pack, Yes, thats the way they tend to come out looking . I've bought several from pawn shops that looked like yours and ground them back in to usable condition . You'll loose some point but gain belly for slicing and since it was a steel I wanted to keep that closed the deal . But yes, you can send it to Buck for a new blade . They do fine work . DM

Well, since the new blades aren't the same anymore, I may just have to redo it....but what Pack Rat pictured is what I don't want, so it's going to be a lot more difficult.

I'll make sure to take pictures.

I could have shaped the broken blade to look like the unbroken one. I just grew bored playing with it. And it was a whole lot more broke than an eighth inch.

Joe, Your free to shape it to what ever style you desire . Just go slow and think thru your moves . DM
