This strikes VERY close to home...i've been back there numerous times. There is a shooting range on that road, but not near where this happened. Considering the suspect has not been found, I'll be extremely cautious the next few days.

BLACKSBURG

The bodies of two young adults, a man and a woman, were found this morning in the Jefferson National Forest in Montgomery County, the sheriff's office said.

Sheriff Tommy Whitt said it is being considered a double homicide. Whitt said both victims appear to have been shot but he wouldn't say how many times or where on their bodies. "It's brutal. It's ugly," he said.

The man’s body was found inside a car and the woman’s body outside the car, Whitt said. He said the bodies would be taken to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for autopsies.

The bodies were found in the day use area of Caldwell Fields, a campground on Craig Creek Road, by a bicyclist or a hiker about 8 a.m., Whitt said. He said he believes the killings took place between last night and this morning.

A suspect has not been identified and no weapons were found at the scene, Whitt said. Investigators have been on scene all day attempting to gather evidence.

Whitt said deputies have checked the car's registration and were checking to see if it may have been registered at Virginia Tech. Caldwell Fields, which is only a mile or two from the Craig County line, is a popular hangout spot for Tech students, an official with the U.S. Forest Service said.

Deputies' cellphones don't have a signal in the area, and Whitt said Sprint offered to bring them cellphones that would have service.

See people give me crap for packing when I hit the trails... you never know. I can't say my .357 Mag will get me out of every situation, but it will definitely even the odds.

That's insane.......I was thinking about taking a job in Blacksburg when I get out of the service. Seems like an isolated incident......Blacksburg doesn't have a very high crime rate. It's probably a jilted lover/ex-boyfriend type of deal. I hope the perp gets caught quickly.

I think you are more in danger in isolated places where somebody can drive to like these folks rather than 5 or 6 miles back in the woods on foot.

Drugs. Maybe some wanna be players getting in over their heads. (or LUV) one of the two, I bet.

Just got this email from VT President Steger

To the University Community,

It is with great sorrow that I write to you about an off-campus tragedy involving Virginia Tech students. The Montgomery County Sheriff has confirmed that two Virginia Tech students were the victims of a homicide sometime last night. They were found early this morning by a passerby near the Caldwell Fields area of northern Montgomery County, a popular day use area within the Jefferson Forest, about 12-15 miles from campus. Both were victims of gunshot wounds.

The Montgomery County Sheriff has notified families and subsequently announced the victims as David Metzler, 19, a sophomore in industrial and systems engineering from Lynchburg and Heidi Childs, 18, a sophomore in biochemistry from Forest, Virginia. The sheriff's office continues its investigation and search for a suspect. Any who feels that they might have knowledge related to this should contact the sheriff at 540-382-2951.
