Big Chris sent me these for testing for the steel ranking thread and we decided while I have them here I would put them through their paces. :)

Top knife is CPM 3V.
5" blade
.015" behind the edge.

Bottom Knife is 440C.
4.5" blade
.022" - .025" behind the edge

Both knives were reprofiled to 15 Degrees per side and finished on a 400 grit Congress SIC stone before testing.

Ran 5/8" Manila rope and cardboard as the testing media, cut the Manila rope until the knives reached 17 LBS then then went straight to the Cardboard without touching the edges to really push them to see how good the HT was.

Both knives performed excellent and took no edge damage as in rolling or chipping, no shiny spots on either knife, number of cuts were 120 for the 440C knife and 180 cuts for the CPM 3V knife, both knives were still sharp after, had good bite and would easily slice printer paper clean after.

Cardboard

I cut cardboard until the blades started to lose some bite, but would still slice printer paper as in the knives still had a usable edge.

Followup and ending thoughts.

Both knives performed excellent, I was very impressed overall with both knives, but the 440C knife really stood out to me personally as it was VERY comfortable and more of a utility design that suited what I was doing with them. If you are looking for a quality Custom fixed blade check out Big Chris Customs for sure as they are top notch IMO.

I have a few knives from Chris and they never cease to amaze me. Even when I do things with them I know I shouldn't...they still come through it all in spades. I'm a fan for life. Thanks for confirming what I already suspected, yet couldn't prove.

Yep, he does excellent work for sure no doubt. :)

Jim,
How thick at the spine are these?

Do you consider 400 grit ideal for your test regime for all steels, or have you done much exploring of performance at a variety of grits with an individual steel?

I've got 2 of knives made by Big Chris. I'm completely satisfied by both.

They are around 1/8".

I would say 14 to 16 Microns, something like the brown stones from a Sharpmaker to give an example.

I have done a lot of testing like that yes and there would be some variation as would be expected depending on alloy content, the best thing to do is experiment to see what level of finish works best for you.

Chris made 2 Barongs out of CPM3V stock and i still regard it as one of the best looking Barongs i have seen. It is my jungle Chopper No.1 on top of all the khukuris and parangs i have.
It does things i don't even know possible.

Great job as usual Jim:thumbup:, I always new good 440c HT'd right can perform very well. Thankyou to Big Chris for donating the knives for testing.
