2 great articles on masterwoodsman: Punkwood use, and Natural Insect

Nice thread. Punkwood is a great resource that unlike wonder chaga is move readily available to more people.

Punkwood will ignite with an empty Bic.

With both an empty Bic and Firesteel. If yea have enough punk a tinder bundle really isn't needed as not only will it be a coal extender but punk can actually catch flames on it's own. That too is shown in the below video.

One strike charred punkwood ignition.

Charred punkwood, chaga, dried grass, yellow birch bark, local quartz and WCF knife. With just a bit of practice these components are more than enough to start a fire.

I know there must be some way to work it into a bow drill beyond just a coal extender. Betting it would drill fire much like chaga if the constancy was right. Also betting it would ignite with F&S uncharred if conditions were right.

For anti bug I really like a sweet fern smudge but hardly read anything about that. Also rub it into my clothing and around my neck. Again beyond personal observation I no proof it wofrks. Well the smudge sure does but I guess someone could claim most any smoke would work. Still it rocks.

Thanks for posting those Joe. See you at Blade!

Appreciate the feedback guys. Couldn't agree more with you WW, punkwood vastly underutilized in woodcraft. I just posted one historical quote in the article, but you can find it throughout the old literature as it (still) is a very simple and reliable solution to fire.
