Just sharing 2 pictures a knifemaker friend of mine emailed me :)

First one has a 4" damascus blade made out of a bicicle chain, handle is copper covered with enameled glass and the pommel is a stone called Ojo de Tigre (Tiger's Eye)

Second one has a 5.5" damascus blade (1085 and 1030), handle and guards are made of copper covered with enameled glass.Pommel and end of guards are stabilized wood.

A weird fact about this knife is that in one side of the blade you can see the patterns from the damascus, while on the other you see the layers. If you flip the knife, right under the patterns appears the layers and viceversa.
To keep things strange, the side of the blade showing the patterns is convex and the other is concave.

Both knives are heat treated and functional :)

Interesting design and execution. Especially the handle treatment looks very good-any more info on how he does that?

Thanks, Jens.

He uses powdered glass in different colors and from different manufacturers to make them react between them creating cool patterns. (Same kind used in jewelry and hi end pottery)

You can wet the piece you want to make and pass it over the powder and repeat the process or make some kind of clay and then apply that to the piece. After that you gotta cook it at 900 C.

It can be done on steling silver or copper, as steel gets darker while the glass gets cooked and messes the designs.

Right now he's experimenting with damascus blades and glass, but first he has to cover the lil depressions with a patina of copper so the glass technique works properly. But it's a long process as then the tempering has to be carefully made and diferentially to prevent the glass to shatter.

Keith,

I called Ariel to ask the same thing when I got the pictures.
At the tip of the blade, the center line goes to a side to make one cutting edge more predominant than the other, but the line on the rest of the blade is a straigth one, not all curved as it apears to be

Must be a combination on damascus. lightning and angle of the picture
