I love my Ka-bar heavy bowie (shorty) but the sheath that it came with was driving me NUTS! It was cheaply constructed and by no means was it worth of holding my favorite weekend camp knife so I grabbed some 1/8" cowhide from the local Tandy store, a hand stitching awl and some compression rivets and went to work on trying to improve on the factory design.
I am in NO WAY a leathersmith or whatever you call the leather guys but I don't think it came out too badfor 2 hours of effort. At 5 layers thick (to accommodate the fat handle) it is super rugged. Not very pretty and packed full of rivets but CRAZY TOUGH!
Now I def. read more than I post so I guess this is my newbie intro as well. Hi all, I'm Dave and I like to play with sharp stuff.

On with the pics.....

That's great! Looks like a super tough, no nonsense kind of sheath. Looks perfect for that knife.

Oh and welcome to bladeforums!

Thanks. I usually work in plastics and metal but figured I'd try my hand at leather. Old school ya know. Was thinking of getting some Kydex and seeing what I could do with that next on either my thermoformer or my heat press. I'll post pics if I get a finished product.

Nice work on the sheath.
I've been looking at pics of this knife. Is the handle round, or oval? I think I'd like this knife if the handle is slim, but it looks round...

It's more of an eliptical shape with the fat end down the spine of the handle and getting narrower at the belly. Probably not the best fit for a small handed individual but as for me, I love the grip and the shape. As a reference I generally wear an XL Glove size and it fits me perfectly.

...May not be pretty afterwards but ~10min of whittling on the handle of mine made it just the right size. I currently have it on loan to a friend who needed a decent fixed blade for a long trip. Excellent knife IMO.

BTW, nice job with the sheath - looks pretty good to me - especially for a first effort with leather. I think you are on to something there :)

Well, with 22 rivets it may look like a fashion statement but I don't believe it will EVER fall apart.
Thanks again. I may actually put some effort into the next one. ;)
