I was just wondring if you other makers have this happen from time to time like myself. That little beast shows up when you start to go to the finer grinding belts or hand finish. What do you fellows feel you are doing wrong to make this ripple or dip I should say occur. It happens to me when I start getting in a hurry and jamming the blade into the grinder wheel when I am at the 80 to 100 grit belt point. Then I don't notice it until it is to late. What do you fellows think makes the little beast show up?

Jim,
Not sure if you are grinding on a wheel or platen, but if it's a contact wheel I can tell you what will help.
Get rid of the 90° corners. If you slightly round them, there will be a noticeable improvement.
When you put the steel to the wheel and you're not perfectly parrallel, one of the corners will dig in first.
This will help with plunge cuts also.

even if you do what kit said..........they still show up with unwanted regularity.

The problem lies in the way you are holding the knife against the wheel while you are trying to even up/mirror image your grind shoulders. While you are doing this you are either tilting the knife into the other side of the wheel or pushing too hard on the other side of the wheel, either way it digs in there. The solution is just to be more careful. You have to go back to a fresh 220 grit belt and grind them out and start over on your finish.

In your case..............you are using too much of those giant biceps....let the belt do the cutting and dont push so hard! Dull belts are a prime culprit in this scenerio.

Happens to me when I concentrate too hard on getting the shoulder nice and square. If I just go ahead and grind without concentrating on the shoulder things usually come out OK.

George hit on something there,I would like to ad somtimes if you do not keep the blade moving across the wheel face you will get a small divet.
(IE watching your plung cut etc)
I have went to grinding on a 1 inch wide wheels and it seems like it does not show up now.Just my thoughts

Dwelling too long in the plunge area will get you everytime.. I use a steep angle at first to set it up, and then just stop short on most passes, and dont worry till its almost done..

Jim, have you been breaking the edges on your new belt before you start grinding? I have found out I HAVE to, or I will suffer gouges and grabs right off the git go. What are you using to grind with?

I do break the edges of my belts, not to much though. I have been grinding with a BaderIII for about 3 years.
