Chaga fire from first strike of steel on chert to self sustaining flames in 2 minutes 15 seconds. Nothing spectacular but it was nice to have something go smoothly for a change. This chaga was gathered from the previous outing some weeks ago. The milk weed ovum was gathered in late Autumn. The chaga would be the primary method with milk weed ovum as backup. If those didn't work I would employ my old school fire kit.

Standard twig fire all set. Best to have enough prep work ready before a fire is started. I know it sounds goofy but have made that mistake in the past.

The tinder bundle/nest was made from sacrificing the striker knife's jute lanyard, one milkweed ovum, punk wood and yellow birch bark.

Success!

Here is a video showing the firecraft in real time. First strike of chert on quartz is at 1 minute. Self sustaining flames at 3 minutes 15 seconds.

Thanks for looking.

Nicely done. What brand of neck knife is that one? I like it and would like to get one.

Enjoyed the video. I did not know what chaga was until now.

Yea know Bo I should have included photos of the chaga on the tree. Here is the actual chaga used to start that fire. I gathered it from two Yellow birch trees the first week of Feb. Thanks for looking. :)

Nice work!

I am surrounded by Birch here in my local woods here in Blighty, but alas they are all Silver and I have not seen chaga on them ever :(

My friend is an arborist and has found it only once in almost ten years of searching.

You are lucky to find a glut of it every now and then
