If you were going to spend two uninterrupted months deep in the wilderness during the summer what tools would you want with you?

Here’s what I would choose:

Gransfors Small Forest Axe
Fallkniven F1
Victorinox Hiker
Bahco Laplander Folding Saw
Sharpening Gear - Fallkniven Ceramic 4x1“ Stone, Gransfors Axe Stone
Bic Lighters (x2)
Army Firesteel
100 ft of 550 cord (Maybe More)

NOTE: This is in the context of a Bushcraft/Camping type trip not a survival situation, so you can be pretty lenient. ;)

The Tools I would take:
1. Gansfors Scandinavian Forest Axe
2. Gansfors wildlife Hatchet
3. BKR&T Gameskeeper
4. Leatherman Charge Ti
5. Small Sak

Hey Guys..
Wabajack...

Sounds like fun...

However what do you plan to Eat ???

If I'm going I need to kill something on a regular basis !!!

You can't carry enough stuff to support yourself for two months without hunting/gathering. Check out the articles at http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/arctic_1000_case_study_part_1.html where three guys went 600 miles in three weeks unsuported. They are some of the most experienced ultralight hikers around and they barely pulled it off.

Let's cook up a scenario where you're going to be helicoptered into a site in a temperate mountain forest with lakes and streams and you're going to be self-suffcient for two months. I can work within that box:

day pack for foraging hikes
10'x12' tarp for my initial shelter and roof for my eventual improved shelter
synthetic sleeping bag
closed cell sleeping pad (won't leak)
bug net
axe
big bow saw
4" knife
multitool
small neck knife
firesteel
couple Bic lighters (as mentioned)
LED headlamp and spare batteries
2 liter pot
4 liter pot
.22 scoped rifle and a brick of ammo
fishing pole and tackle
snare wire
shovel
water filter and purification tabs
2 liter water bladder or bottles
cup, bowl, spork
coffee and sugar
vitamins
first aid kit with meds
hammock
am/fm/sw radio
a book on edible plants
three full clothing layers
hats, gloves, spare socks and underwear
rain gear
sunglasses
sunscreen
bug repellent
personal hygeine kit-- tooth care, soap, toilet paper, etc
gps, compass, and maps
pens and journals
digital camera
braided nylon seine twine
550 paracord
bag for hanging food
9mm rope
and a few fifths of very old single malt scotch :)

That's almost everything...but you forgot the kitchen sink:p

I'll go with DaleW's list, brought in by chopper, canoe, or pack string.

To it I would add a drawknife, a froe, and some bulk staples (rice, beans, etc).

Two months? Heck! I'll just be settling in!

That pretty much covers it:p . Complete as always Dale.

I agree with this statement and would like to subscribe to your news letter sir.

Better take some earplugs! Two of them would make for constant meaningless chatter and whining. "My hairrrrrr is sooo dirrrty!....." {{{{{{{{{SPLASH}}}}}}}}}

BTW, I do have foam earplugs in my first aid kit. I've camped by streams so loud it was amazing. They make good fishing bobbers too -- run through with a twig and tie your line to one end.

Right now I am just toying with the idea and might seriously consider doing this in the summer vacation of 08. Right know I am just curious to some of the tools or gear you guys would want with you so I can more seriously visualize the requirements. :)

I posted mainly my tool list earlier but here’s the full list as of yet: (I added some great ideas from you guys) ;)

Tools:
Gransfors Small Forest Axe
Fallkniven F1
Victorinox Hiker/Leatherman Charge
Small Neck Knife (Fallkniven WM1?)
Sharpening Gear - Fallkniven Ceramic Stone, Gransfors Axe Stone, Lansky Folding Diamond Rod
Bahco Laplander
Folding Shovel
Crook Knife
Large Bow Saw
Folding Shovel
Drawknife

Gear:
Light Sleeping Bag
Bivi Bag
Larger Backpack
Daypack
Poncho/Tarp
Bug Net
Sleeping Mat
Coghlans Backpack Grill
Litech Tea Kettle
Titanium Cookware and Utensils
Canteen/Water Bottle
Bic Lighters (x2)
Army Firesteel
Appropriate Clothing

Big Bag of Rice
.22 rifle with scope and plenty of ammo
Fishing Gear

550 cord
Headlamp and Spare Batteries
Insect Repellant and Sun Screen

Small Backpack Solar Panel for charging electronics (Camera/GPS)

Bag For Hanging Food

Lots of gear :D

I’ll play around with the list quite a bit till I get it just right, I would like to keep it as simple as possible so this list is a lot bigger than the final one (I‘m probably missing something to). If I do indeed decide on doing this (as of right know definitely) it will be in Wabakimi Provincial Park, where a float plane would take me deep in. :D

I still would love to know what you would take with you for 2 months in the wilderness. :)

For the people who love to make lists, this thread is for you. I don't see much attention paid to food storage, preparation, re supply, water purification, etc., etc. Knifes are great tools, but not the only tools one needs to last 2 months in the woods. I would pack a generator, gas and the satellite dish. Two months is a long time to be disconnected from the system.

I don't see much attention paid to food storage...

Most of the food will have to be gathered or hunted and eaten immediately with such a long uninterrupted time out there, so storage isn't necessary

food preparation...

Pots, Pans, Salt and Sugar. What more do I need? :D

food re supply...

Don't need it.

water purification.

Boiling.

Knifes are great tools, but not the only tools one needs to last 2 months in the woods.

This thread is mainly about the TOOLS you would bring not all of the GEAR (although I think it‘s great if people want to post that.) :)

I would pack a generator, gas and the satellite dish

This isn't car camping, and you can't exactly pack that in a backpack. :) Plus going deep in the woods is to get away from that stuff. ;)

Remember this is just a hypothetical thread for posting what tools or gear you would bring out with you for 2 months in the wilderness. ;)
