I had a few more Wetterlings handles come in and decided to combine a couple of them with some great US heads that I had. Another 1.75lb Plumb Victory and a ridged True Temper 2lb boys head. I got really lucky on the 20 inch Handle for the victory as it has lovely curly stripes. The true temper is on a 26 inch handle and handles like a dream.

It really is kind of a luck of the draw thing as to whether or not you can use the Swedish handles with the American heads. Sometimes the eye on the American heads is just a little too big for the Swedish handles.

Looks really nice, I did something similar to what you did with your swedish/american combo. I hung did a Sater Banko Swedish head on an Wetterlings handle. Worked out really well, it was your last post of the first plumb you did that gave me the idea to do it.

Thanks! Any pics of your Sater-Banko?

Where does a guy find Wetterlings handles or any Swedish wood?
What wood do they use?

I get the GB handles from SHforestry supplies and the Wetterlings handles from Lie-Nielson. They mostly seem to be made from American Hickory. Also, I cant guarantee that the eye profiles will work for whatever heads you have. Like my Council Hudson Bay wouldnt work with the 26" Wetterlings handle because the eye was about 1/4" longer in the head than on the handle.

It's a strange state of affairs that Swedish-made handles are created from USA-exported Hickory. But that's how it's done! Traditional European (ie Swedish wood!) choices are Birch, Beech and Ash. Hickory is found only in n. America and long ago proved to be affordably superior for making durable tool handles. Eye sizes of Euro axes that aren't set up to use Hickory are typically larger in diameter.

Thank you both. I have been getting into axes & hatchets lately. Lots to learn.
