2 New GECs for me

Today I received 2 new GECs. A red jigged bone hound touth and an orange farm and field tool lockback. I love both of the knives. The hound tooth is very slim and very pocketable. The F&F feels very ergonomic and robust but still quite pocketable as well. The fit and finish on both are superb. I was pretty disapointed in the edges on both though. They came pretty dull and apparently pretty obtuse. I have been swiping the hound tooth on my sharpmaker at 40* inclusive and I'm not getting to the edge. Sharpening these knives might take a while since all I have are course and fine sharpmaker rods.

They look great. It sucks that gec doesn't spend a little more time on their edges. At least you get lots of sharpening practice :P

nice knives, invest in a diamond hone, and you will have the satisfaction of getting whatever edge you want without the hours of repetitive rocking over the sharpmaker that make your wife think you have gone catatonic or something. :)

Quoted for truth.

I cant recommend the Lansky Diamond sharpening kit enough. Its been perfect for turning my GECs into scalpels. I do however micro-bevel them on the SharpMaker at 40 afterward and it works great!

As a matter of fact, my Hound Tooth is probably one of my sharpest knives.

The GEC Hound Tooth has really been catching my eye lately. Thank you for sharing the pictures thats a couple of great knives you acquired there. :)

Congratulations on your new knives :) Disappointing to hear about the edges :(

Good looking knives. I particularly like the houndstooth; the red bone looks super good.

Nice knives! It kind of worries me about the edges. Im in Kenya and my buddy is bringing me my first GEC's (Bullnose, new clip point boys knife, scout trapper) in early May. All I have to maintain my knives is my spyderco sharpmaker. I hope the edges are good, I want to use them over here.

The issue with the Sharpmaker is that the blade angle has to match the stone angle in order to actually sharpen the edge. On a new knife the angles are unlikely to match. Much has been written in the Maintenance forum about using Sharpies and such. A bit of reading there will save you grief later.

The Hound tooth is a seriously good looking knife. Might be making my #72 wharncliffe nervous.

As for only having a Sharpmaker to do the edges - you will eventually get there with the gray stones but it would save time having some kind of diamond surface to get the grunt work done.

nice catch,,,,,my 55 is my favorite knife (this week) haha,,no really next week too, Im sure.Im broke again.
