2 new kabar slippies, are here

The 1st is a 1177 from 1960's Coke Bottle
2nd is the 1148 from late 60's to early 70's electrician's knife

That 1177 looks like it is mighty nice. Hope you'll post some pics.

The 1148 looks beat like a bad dog :) Bummer it's missing the bail. I've got a nice one that I'll be carrying once I get it sharpened. I posted up a thread with pics in this subforum somewhere. It's pretty heavy but as it's basically a multitool it will come in quite handy. I have some decent cheapo non-KA-BARs that I have scattered around. The electrician's knife, aka TL-29, pattern has been around for a pretty long time. There are a TON of posts and photos in the Trad forum for this pattern, including a large variety with delrin or wood scales, and a now-banned member had rescaled his with some dope blue micarta. My project wishlist includes doing some fun projects using the TL-29 as a chassis, and my custom wishlist includes getting one of the good makers to do up a custom one.

Yeh I knew of the electricians knife and for 8 bucks missing that loop and kinda beat up well ill take it. The coke bottle was an accident actually. I saw one trying, trying being the important word, to sell for 150. So when I saw this I bid $1 higher and expected to get outbid but nope. So in happy with em.

Sweet finds, and some classic Kabar at its best. Those electricians knives, lived a hard life, as most electrician (I'm a Master) are hard on tools. That's why we like Klein, and Kabar, they can take it.

This is good to know. I can start calling you instead of my uncle when I have wiring questions. I think he's tired of me. :p

I found an old Camillus TL-29 in an old toolbox in my laundry room. It was either my father's knife, or his father's. It was in pretty rough condition (all complete, though) with thick red rust and a heavy black patina all over it, but I've been working on it slowly and carefully, soaked it last night in WD-40. It's coming out quite nicely. The screwdriver blade has a brass liner-lock mechanism and the scales are black plastic with aluminum bolsters. I'll post photos in the morning.

Cool find, did they have that knife by any chance because they were in the service?

No, neither of them were in the service, but my grandfather did a lot of mechanic work (he worked on drag racers) and my father was a carpenter for most of his life until he injured his back on the job.

Here's my knife as I found it. Pretty gnarly.

And after some soaking in WD-40 and judicious and careful use of 400-grit sandpaper and Scotchbrite pads:

Looks great now. Is it still solid enough to use? Scales and bolsters tight, pivot not all rusted up, lock not tweaked?

Yes it is. Everything's tight, the pivot works fine and is much smoother now, the lock locks up well and strongly. Only thing is there's a small amount of separation on one scale and a bit of space between the screwdriver backspring and liners. Looks like maybe somebody pried with it at one point. Other than that and needing some sharpening, it's still very useable. Sharpening's going a bit slowly (Spyderco Sharpmaker, even the coarse stones aren't super aggressive and the edge was pretty bad) but once it's cutting again I plan on carrying it. :)

An eight dollar TL-29 off ebay is super fun. Finding a dad's or grandad's TL-29 in the shed and restoring it to working order is something a level above that!

ok they are here and damn the electricians knife is beat up. The tip of the slip blade is actually exposed since the back spring is over-doing its job and pushing it out of the handle. Its a shame because i REALLY like this pattern and would like to carry it. I had no idea that the second blade was a liner lock, nor did i know that it was sharpened. I just kinda figured it was a screwdriver/prying tool. Im gonna try and find another one in better condition to carry. Damn im kinda upset.

Also the coke bottle came and MY GOD THIS THING IS HUGE. I think this is just going into the collection, i dont see a need to carry a freaking 5" closed slipjoint around

Yeah, it blew my mind a little. :D I also found dad's old Imperial camp knife/demolitions knife in his dresser drawer. That one's in much better shape.

Damn, that thing is huge. AND AWESOME.
