I had the opportunity to go to France recently (just got back last night) and I always try to get something as a souvenir of whatever country I visit. I purchased 2 new knives.
One is an Opinel No. 8. I am not that familiar with this type of French knife, but it is a very light folder with an interesting locking mechanism. After you open the blade, you twist a metal collar at the end of the handle which covers the joint and will keep the blade from closing on you. I would not want to use the knife or its locking mechanism for heavy work, but it is a neat design from 100+ years ago.
The other knife I purchase is the Victorinox Swiss Army TrailMaster with black scales (OK, not exactly made in France, but close enough). It is heavier and beefier than I thought it would be. I want to see how well the wood saw works.
I promise to get photos up later. I still have to unpack and get laundry going, etc.
