2 New Knives I Purchased

I had the opportunity to go to France recently (just got back last night) and I always try to get something as a souvenir of whatever country I visit. I purchased 2 new knives.

One is an Opinel No. 8. I am not that familiar with this type of French knife, but it is a very light folder with an interesting locking mechanism. After you open the blade, you twist a metal collar at the end of the handle which covers the joint and will keep the blade from closing on you. I would not want to use the knife or its locking mechanism for heavy work, but it is a neat design from 100+ years ago.

The other knife I purchase is the Victorinox Swiss Army TrailMaster with black scales (OK, not exactly made in France, but close enough). It is heavier and beefier than I thought it would be. I want to see how well the wood saw works.

I promise to get photos up later. I still have to unpack and get laundry going, etc.

I love the opinel knives for a good lightweight bushcraft folder, and I have one of their larger models so that when I travel I can easily carry a cooking knife with me.

I have both knives and they are great. The opinel is superbly sharp and easy to maintain. It is an awesome slicer with its full flat + convex edge and takes on a beautiful patina on its carbon blade. The only issue with the Opinel's are that the handles swell when they get wet making opening the blade very difficult. Some people mod theirs by sanding it at the pivot and adding into water sealer. I use mine more for urban pocket carry than for outdoors. The other thing about the opinel's are that they are very people friendly looking.

Trailmaster is a great SAK. I like it a lot.

Opinels are some great knives. Great slicers. But, you went to France .. without pictures

Gosh you guys are impatient. I took the photos, but now I have to figure out how to post them here. I have to have them at a web address first t appears, so give me a moment to make that happen.

This is the first time I have posted attachments, so let's see how it does. Enjoy!
