Ok, so I now have a large and small regular Sebenza, seemingly the perfect combination, and I was hoping that having them would stop my buying for awhile, but it's difficult to resist.

Anyway, I want a Spyderco Military, but I want to wait to see the Paramilitary... Should I get one or just stick with the sebs?
I also want to get my hands on a bali, but there are soo many. I like the Microtechs, but I also like the looks of the Spyderfly, but I don't know when that's coming out either. Whats a good bali for the money?

Wow that's a lot of thought:rolleyes:

Sebenza: Gateway knife to the Hard Stuff...

Spyderco makes a nice knife alright, but what you really want to be looking at is a nice Custom or twenty from the likes of Kit Carson, Mike Obenauf, Scott Cook, Tom Mayo and Ken Onion. Then go back to the Sebenza's for a good beater knife ;)

The sebenza is as good as any custom to me. I don't think I can afford customs, but I plan on buying one at the Guild show this summer if I have money then. It's a good idea, but for now if I buy anything it's going to be on the cheaper side.

St. James is pretty much spot on, as usual. Obenauf's are still available for only slightly more than a large Sebenza, while J.W. Smith framelocks can be had for around $400.00 or slightly more.

But take what I say with a grain of salt as I've landed back in Sebenzaland!:D  :)

I'd go for a Military. No, the fit and finish isn't even remotely close to a Sebbie, but the design is amazing. I'd be hard pressed to come up with a folder that is more functional than a Military.

Think of it this way. When I've got a ton of cardboard on the garage floor that I'm cutting up, and the wife says that she needs my knife to cut something, you won't see me skidding my Sebenza across the concrete floor to her.

Or when I'm fishing in a small boat with my buddy, and he asks to borrow my knife, you won't see me throw my Sebenza his way, praying that it won't land in the water.

The Seb is an awesome knife, but sometimes it just makes more sense to carry a knife like the Military. You don't get the Sebenza quality or pride of ownership in a Military, but you do get what is probably the most universally functional utility folder ever made.

The Para looks really sweet, and I'm sure that I'll buy one, but it won't be any replacement for the Military. The compression lock is not nearly as convenient to operate, and the blade is a tad too small for cutting Morabito's double-meat roast beef sandwhiches with extra mayo.

I agree 100%, the Military always seems to be the knife that finds it's way into my pocket because of it's light weight, cutting performance, good grip, great materials.

Get yourself a Military. You won't regret it. I have lots of knives, and quite often I'm selling or trading some of them in order to get new ones. Somehow, my Military never seems to even get considered as trading stock.

Balisongs are a fun way to branch out your collection. Benchmade makes the best user Bali's, with great materials. The Microtech Dragonfly is pretty good quality, but I don't prefer Aluminum handles. The Tachyon is quite expensive, and hard to find, but great looking design. Cold Steel has one called the Arc Angel, with a neat look to it, but is also a bit on the pricey side.

Another way to think of branching out is to get into autos, or "Switchblades."

No collection is complete without a few fixed blades, either.

For a good beater knife, look into the Military, or BM 710, Al Mar SERE 2000, or MT LCC. All get great reviews, and are high quality. Personal preference is the only deciding factor in those choices.

All is just my Opinion, of course...:D

Edited to remove bad info...

If you are going to the Guild Show...save your money now and spend it on something there. I'm sure you will find something to make the wait worthwhile.

Your comments on the Military are quite convincing. I guess I'll buy one soon, but not right this second. I want to give all my attention to my new sebenzas right now. Where can I get pics of the Paramilitary? I can only imagine what it looks like...

I don't own a Seb, but I have played with one. If they were in my price range, I'd buy two. I have yet to handle the Military or the Paramilitary.

Go handle one millie before you buy it. I´d been really impressed by the good reviews about that knife. But in my hand it was different. So, not saying anything against the reviews, it is not made for me.

Buzz´ aguments ae reasonable, even though i nearly never give away my knife to somebody else. But a good solid user, that can take scratches is a good way.

I don´t say think about a BM 806 or 805 or the best midsized: the 520.....:D

Have you looked at any of the Benchmades? Check out the 710HS, the 94x series, the 806D2, etc. A Military is still on my list, but I've been holding back. Mainly because I have a Spyderco Starmate already and never carry it. Mainly because I can open and close my 710HS faster and with less effort.

Since buying my large Sebenza, I look at other folders differently. I buy "other folders" but nothing can take the place of the Sebenza for me. Some customs are nice. However I am absolutely tired of having incredibly long repair times if a custom folder needs adjustments or repairs.

The Sebenza walks the fine line of being custom quality with a production and business minded company (CRK) standing behind it. The perfect combination, for my needs. You can use it with peace of mind. Plus you know that it will never fail you. I have never heard of a Sebenza having a quality problem of any type!

You can find many many high quality production folders offering a lot for the money. I have Emersons, Benchmade 710s, Tops Magnums, Spydercos, Camillus, Kershaws, Al Mar, etc etc etc. I carry them, I use them and I enjoy them. But, to me, if I want to carry the very best quality folder I know of, I carry a Sebenza.

I wanna see this ParaMilitary. I did a couple searches and found very little. I'm very curious.

I've handled a Military before. My cousin has one. I don't remember exactly how it felt. It has a similarly shaped handle to the ATR which I've handled more recently, but I hope the Military's handle is a bit smaller.

As far as Benchmade...they're nice, but I've lost interest in them. Don't know why really...

I've come up with another question: S30V or 440V (S60V) for the Military? I'd assume the S30V might look a little nicer and it's the new popular steel, but the 440 is prob tougher. What do you guys think?

The S30V version of the Military is much nicer, if only for the fact that the handle slabs are thicker. The older versions had a tendency to flex a bit. As a rule, always go the newest version of the Military. Spyderco is constantly updating the design with small changes here and there. A number of these small changes can make a pretty big difference.

There's nothing small about the handle on the Military. I haven't handled an ATR for comparison.
