I work in a electric motor shop, and there is quite a bit of micarta around. How do you tell what type it is? This stuff is brown, and looks a lot like wood. Also, if I make a knife handle out of it for a kitchen knife, and it accidently ends up in the dishwasher, will this have any effect on it? Thank you.

If I had to take a wild guess I'd say it's probably canvas Micarta. The natural canvas stuff is tan/brown. Take a file to a corner/end of it and bevel it about 30 degrees or so. If you end up with no layering showing up, you have paper Micarta, if it has a lot of layers, it's probably linen, and if it looks like burlap without a whole lot of differentiation between the layers it's most likely canvas. I would guess you have canvas, though, if I had to. Micarta can go through the dishwasher pretty easily, I think, but the epoxy that holds everything together doesn't do quite so well.
