What kind of handle material that it is? Im thinking Appalossa bone. Both are 10 dot so I am thinking they were made in 1980.

Also as you can see the rust spots on the barlow, what would be the best way to remove them? Its carbon steel.
Thanks

Yeah, I'd say Appaloosa bone -- Case first used it in 1979 I think.

To get rid of the rust, the first thing I'd do is wet the blades down with WD-40 and give them a good rubbing with paper towels (also wet with WD-40) - repeat a few times. This is usually good for removing superficial rust. If any rust is left, you may need to use some good, fine sandpaper - say 800 or 1000 grit on a mousepad and stroke the blades flat against it -- don't use much pressure and be a little patient and they should clean up fine. Avoid cheapo sandpaper - the grit is not graded very tightly - so you'll have fine sandpaper that also creates huge scratches that you cannot get rid of; 3M automotive sandpaper works great. And please, for the love of God: do NOT use a Dremel *anything* on a knife.

I'm not sure its Case's 'Appaloosa' bone from what I can see from your photo's but definitely smooth bone scales. Can't see markings either.. As for the light cleaning of the blades I'd use a mineral oil bath for 1-2 days and then rub clean with a soft cotton cloth.

Yes, those are both Appaloosa bone...each will have an A before the 6 in the pattern number.

In 1979 Case introduced a line of 10 pocket knives with smooth bone handles - 5 in Appaloosa and 5 in "Satin Rose" (red). Those are two of the patterns from that line.

This represented the first time that Case produced "standard product" pocket knives in bone that was sold or marketed as being in a particular color.
