I have a Buck Classic 111 that was given to me by my Mother in Law a long time ago and for the life of me, I can't remember when. It is the one with the metal alloy scales that are engraved and has an engraved scroll on each side to have your name or something engraved on it.

It is stamped "Buck" in fancy lettering, below that two dots then 111 then two more dots. USA is stamped below that.

Could someone give me an idea of when it was made?

The second question is about the USA made Bucks sold at WalMart. I know that some of their Abu Garcia fishing reels are made just for WalMart and use different internal components than the ones you find in tackle shops. I am wondering if the Bucks sold there are different than those sold by other dealers and how can you tell them apart?

Thanks

1981

Nope, they are the same knives. Typically Wal-Mart USA made Bucks will come with a nylon belt sheath instead of a leather one, but the knives are the same.

Thank you, mine is the one on the bottom. My MIL had my name engraved on one side and I've been meaning for years to have my birthdate engraved on the other side.

I'm sure it's not a good "working" knife, but then I wouldn't even try to use it that way. I have too many others to take a chance on skinning this one up. With the fancy sheath, it's more like a "dress up" knife.

the sides skin up realllllllll easy!
and can not be buffed out..
4 dots is a 1981 blade i think and the first year of 425HC steel
there are not many of the 111 with the 4 dot blades!
i have never seen one my self!
it is worth hanging on to !
that is unless you want to sell it to me :D (mod's i am jest jokeing)
three dots is the last year of 440C
this knife is also the first knife to have full simi hollow grind
fully one year ahead of the 110..
of course i may be wrong much of the time as i am fuzzy around the edges...
i have a small brain and it leaks dont you know..

So thats a good thing?

I called my MIL and she remembered ordering it with my name engraved on it for my birthday, but didn't remember what year. I do know that I was really impressed with how sharp it was. I could actually shave with it and the blade has such a polish job on it that you can use it for a mirror.

Thanks for the replies!

Check this one out on Ebay (190253861030). It's hard to tell, but I think it has 3 dots. Looks like one dot on the left and two on the right.

Amazing what a fancy knife you thought that was then Plum(and it certainly is) But compare it to some(or many to be more correct) you have today:D

Happy to ressurect this old thread to the top spot:thumbup:

Where the heck is the picture of it though?:p

My in-laws are terrific people. My Father in Law will be 95 on June 4th and my Mother in Law just turned 92. I always got on well with them and I look after them now. It was very rough on them when my wife passed away as she was their only child. Myself and my son are all the relatives that they have left, so we are all pretty close.

LOL...and I thought I was the only one...yep, I've only heard of mother-in-laws like that. If I do get a knife, well....I doubt it would be handed to me:rolleyes:

I would put the date on that knife from 1982 thru 1985. The sides of the frame are coined not engraved. This is the same process used on coins, thus the name. Not many were made with polished blades. Some knives were made with a polished banner in the early years but they may have scratched too easily so they apear to have gone to the satin banner to get away from that problem.
