I am taking my knife collection in a different direction. I have several Case, Hen & Rooster, etc knives. I intend to sell several of these and a few fixed blade knives and start a foray into the Benchmade, Spyderco, Esee, Kershaw etc direction.

Question one is:
In a folder which could be used as a hunting/multipurpose type knive in the $100 - $200 dollar range what do you guys consider a good/great value? Dont have a preference as to whether it is a/o or not. Just want good steel, smooth action and general overall quality Prefer roughly 3.5" to 4.5" blade.

Question two:
In a fixed blade, is there a good bushcraft/survival/hunting knife made? Or is this too much to ask of one knife? I would like a 5" - 7" blade.

Pretty much a noob here, so if I have left out details as to what I want please feel free to let me have it.....:)

I'm no hunter so I can't help on the first question.

As for the second one, have you looked at ESEE? It sounds like the ESEE 6 is exactly what you're looking for, at least on paper.

Whats your preference stylistically? Coated carbon steel, or satin stainless? Stacked leather handles or Micarta slabs? Choil or no choil? Those sort of things, that way people can give you some more suitable recommendations.

In regards to steel, I want whatever is "best" for the type of applications I listed. I am not concerned about rust as I keep my knives up real well. I do much prefer Micarta slab handles. I do like a choil, but is not high upon the decision list. The Esee 6 does indeed appear to be an excellent choice and will be one I look at closely. Thanks for your suggestion.

Well I am set for a while on the folders. I bought a Spyderco Military in the digital camo with black blade and a Benchmade bone Collector 1520.

So far, it looks like the ESEE 6 has a leg up on the fixed blade choice...

Great choices! Really, really hard to go wrong there. For the fixed blade, maybe check out some custom knives in the "Makers" section!

Perhaps I'll do just that. Have only looked at the Becker 7 and the ESEE 6 thus far as the folder search has consumed me today.

A spyderco military or benchmade 940 for the folder

And an esee, rat cutlery, or ontario for the fixed blade
