1) I just pulled an old head out of the vinegar bath. It is 3 LB and 7 1/8 OZ. There are no markings on it. It looks to have a good bit of forged steel on it. Any ideas about its origins or maker?
2) I'm restoring a Collins 2 1/4 axe head and need to fix the eye profile (see photo). The pencil line is where intend to file to. I got it be finding the centre of the head and describing an arc from the top of the eye to the bottom. Does it look about right?

With those ridges in the eye True Temper? Just guessing.

There are those that would advise against removing bit material but opinions vary. For myself, I would probably not use a tool that didn't look right. It may work fine but it would always nag me. To my eye the curvature looks correct.

1) I agree with jb, it's possibly a True Temper, but hard to confirm since others also had ridged eyes with no stamp.

2) Depending how thick that bit is, that look like a lot of work for little benefit. I'd sharpen it up and use it.

Thanks, guys. As I look at the photo, the angle distorts it so that it doesn't look that bad. To my eye, as I am working on it, the heel really looks unnaturally protruded compared to the toe. I will go at it carefully with the file. When it feels like a lot of pain for little gain, I will likely stop. Being a perfectionist is a bit of a double edged sword.

More than likely a True Temper perhaps from their Woodslasher line. Or one that TT made for some hardware store chain.

About grinding the heel of the Collins, that looks about right. I might put a little less curve in the bit. I think they look newer/fresher this way. Maybe take it back another 1/8" in the center. But that's just personal preference.
