I'm getting ready to grind my first knife, I'm jumping right in to folders but it will be a different breed all together, just got done with a cardboard mock-up :) (more on that later...)

Anyway, I have a couple of questions for you guys.

1: Has anyone ever used a local tooling heat treating company to do a knife? I live in one of the largest tooling manufacturer markets in the country and have about 20 companies that do heat treating local to me, but they primarily heat treat tools, which I'm sure would include industrial knives. Do you think they're good enough to trust with heat treating ATS-34 or 154 cm?

2: What hardness should a woodworking chisel be taken to? Not this project, but a future one will be a set of woodworking chisels for myself, but I'm not sure where they should be in hardness...

Thanks!

with twenty HT companys around i am sure one would do ats-34/154cm both HT the same. 440c would be a good one to start with. as far as RC for chisels i would ask them, probaly 58-60 RC just like the ats-34/154cm. if that is the steel you will use.

I think that it is best to seperate your questions into two different threads and to make sure that they have a header that covers the questions... More chance for decent answers....
