1) Has anyone ever bleached their micarta? What were the effects?

2) Does anyone know where to get soft zippered cases that'll fit the Battle Mistress? (figured better to ask in here).

Thanks ahead of time!

1. no idea
2. maxpedition makes soft clamshell type cases.

I have a couple of knife cases that I ordered from Maxpedition. Go to their website at www.maxpedition.com

Look under
  • Bags/Cases
  • Razorshell

You will need the R-19 Razorshell to fit the FBM.

Damnit Man... Share with the rest of us!! You can't just pose a question, get the answer privately, and leave us all hanging!!! Now I'm curious about bleaching Micarta! That could be sweet looking!

I'm calling foul!!...... That's it. I'm leaving too.

Drink is empty.. Gotta get a re-fill... Be right back!

:D I meant I found out where to get the cases I wanted. I'm STILL curious about bleaching micarta. I'm about to just give it a go and hope for the best :p

i imagine it will lighten the color. since micarta is a form of cloth with dye in it. it may weaken it as well, as bleach will tend to do.

you can be the guinea hog!! :)

The real question is: how does Rit dye affect it?

Can you say "psychodelic Battle Mistress"?

I believe a high percentage hydrogen peroxide will bleach just about anything, but it has to be neutralized when you want it to be done. If you can get it, do not, I repeat DO NOT let it get on your skin. Regular household bleach is petroleum based, so I do not think it will penetrate phenolics (this may require further research). I also believe either way, that these agents degrade natural fiber. So, on a canvas micarta it could be devestating. Just my $.1/2 of input. Good luck.

I just used some watered down bleach (1/30) and it just did a very nice job cleaning my micarta on the Mag........I'm actually hesitant to do anything stronger....I got to thinking along the same lines as you guys in terms of strong bleach breaking down the fibers. I dunno. I have a cheapo micarta knife around here somewhere. I'll have to test on that. If I mess up the scales on my Magnum I'm S.O.L. I can't get replacements.

I just use oven cleaner....cleans everything off a blade and handle, it is great for cleaning crinkle coat blades.

I used carburetor cleaner and it also worked well. As did oil off (I think it was called). The bleach mix went a little further, but not too much. Did a nice job.
