Informational edit:
This is a Buck 196 Mini Alpha Hunter. The blade is laser etched with a 2008 marking. The opposite side says that the steel is BOS heat treated 154CM. The blade is polished. The handles are made of green paperstone. I checked the 2008 catalog on BCCI and there were no knives available with green paperstone handles that year. The 196 was available in 154CM in rosewood or mossy oak. There was also an amazing David Yellowhorse 196 available.
The 196 was introduced in 2003 in ATS-34.
The darker knife is a Buck 195. These were introduced in 2010. The blade is satin 420HC, where the model 196 that year was 12c27. The knife in the picture was manufactured in 2012 as part of a 195/499 combo, which included a stainless 420HC Buck 499 PakLite guthook and a black nylon sheath that holds both.
The blades on the combo are stamped USA and the 196 is laser etched (?) with USA. The catalog suggests that in 2012 these pieces were made in USA, although Ive seen posts on this site that suggest otherwise?
Please add to this post anything in relation to 195 / 196 information /history.
the first Buck I purchased and the latest Buck I've acquired.
