Hey, I'm very new to 2 stroke dirt bikes. I've had 4 strokes for awhile tho. My question is, what is an easy way to know if you need a top end rebuild?

Thanks,

It's been a long time for me... I raced 100cc pre-mix Hodakas back in the 70s....
We used to rebuild them frequently, 3 races or so. These were little bitty high-revving engines with single-ring pistons.... Under a lot of stress. Also, the rebuild was cheap and easy.
With a modern engine, oil-injection and all... I wouldn't bother unless you had a noticeable loss of compression/power.

My 250 Honda needed new rings 10hours they said to change the piston at 20 hours but I never did.

If you are casually riding the track or trail riding I would say run it until it becomes difficult to start or there is noticeable power loss.
If you are racing you may want to check it every few races.
I have a KTM 250 with over 100 hrs on it and it still rips. I race Hare Scrambles through the woods and don't wind it out for very long before having to bottle neck back on a rabbit path. Once in a while I will hit the MX track but prefer to wiz through the trees.

How do you like your Ktm? People tell me that they brake often.

The big complaint back in the nineties was getting parts. In our days they are so popular it is a non issue. IMO they are the best bikes in the industry. Their Tech and R&D is well beyond the Japanese and their higher price reflects that. Its like comparing a Toyota to a BMW.
