2-Way Radio suggestions?

Lately I've been thinking of getting a couple of 2-way radios or two hand-held cb's, mostly to keep track of the 14 year old kid when outdoors. Any suggestions or recommendations as to type, make, and model?

I have two pairs of Motorola brand FRS radios, and they have been excellent performers. They are durable and tough and the quality construction is evident when compared to some other brands.

I tend to use the simpler pair I bought first them most. I have second pair with more features, but I tend to have trouble trying to utilize a lot of the features if I don't have the instruction booklet on hand!

Stay sharp,

I would get either these Cobra GMRS with the bells and whistles or I would get these Icoms.

The Icoms especially are much better performers than the blister pack radios and more durable. Also, since it's using FM frequencies, the transmissions are much more clear than CB channels---if I remember my info correctly.

Instead of listing a brand name, I'll just recommend the FRS/GMRS radios. Keep the radio you choose simple, so you don't need the book and after you get them, use the radios in different types of terrains so that you can understand how they will work when in an emergency.

Garman Rino Radio/GPS have some great, super great, features but as a Garmin dealer I have to be honest and say the radio is "so-so." I own Rino's myself and use them all the time with when working with groups in the wild...but I either carry a rechargable Motorola GRS as a back up or a Yeasu VX-6R HT HAM radio if I need longer range communication.

So as a general rule if you need an effective short range radio you can't beat the Motorola, if you need to manage other people knowing their location (such as hunting or working with others) and can tolerate the lesser effective radio, then the Rino is the way to go. HAM is the most effective if you need longer range.

I like CB, but use GMRS around camp and for comms between a group in close proximity.

I have a portable/packable home brew antenna that gives great range with CB from camp. I use a TRC-241

For quick, clear, easy comms on patrol, go GMRS.

For survival go handheld CB.

I have had good Luck with FRS/GMRS radios by motorola. I have couple sets with weather radio built in, i usually bring these camping.

I have an old really basic pair whith 0 bells and 0 whistles that only has 10 chanels I believe, I can send these to you gratis if you would like. just send me your Address.
