I recently acquired a Motorola MR350R 2 way radio that operates in the 462+ - 467+ MHz frequency range.

I want to bring these to Europe for my brother and i to keep effective contact without worrying about international roaming cellphone bills.

Do you think these will work for us? Do you have any better ideas?

Thanks ahead! :)

That frequency range is pretty much line of sight. How far apart do you think you will be? If you are thinking of miles, I doubt that they will work if there is anything in the way, like buildings. You might want to experiment with them before your trip.

Also, you might want to check the laws in the countries where you intend to use them.

We will probably stay within a maximum of 1 mile apart from each other. This is just for those quick tangential runs that either one of us will scurry off on and be able to meet back up in a crowded area. I'll definitely check out the range and experiment.

I see some laws regarding power ouput and this device is quite low power (1.5W max).

What family friendly 2-way radios are recommended for vacations? I'm thinking about my mother who is getting older and may be in a shop looking at trinkets while I'm out and about the area when we get separated from each other. We have cellphones but, in the past they have been problematic. I would like to stay out of the FCC frequency and power levels but, would consider the 'family' FCC radio requirements if needed. It would need some sort of standby signaling sound to get her attention and if it did a text message that would be awesome.

In the limited research leading up to this trip, i came across a few Motorola pairs that shoud do decently:

Motorola MH230, MR352, MR350.

My moto mr350 is capable of 'signal' calling, alerting the partner by a ringtone along with vibration. They can then respond by speaking to acknowledge your signal call. Just letting you know that i function such as this, at least on Motorola, is available.

I noticed other sets from Midland, Uniden, and Cobra which also receive rave reviews.

Ranges for the radios are usually maximum !! Ideal conditions . In realconditionslike the Catskill Mtns of NY the range may be much less. Test it first !
