A real newbie question - and I am a real newbie, at least with 2 X 72. So, it has ocurred to me that it might be nice to have a leather 2 X 72 belt to strope the blade edge. Are they out there? Is it going to kill me to buy one?

I bought one a while back with the same intentions. IMO, don't waste your money. The belt was pretty expensive, came about an inch too short and they tell you to to put it on your machine to stretch it out. That in it's self took a while. The belt also had a ridge/bump where it was lapped together and when you tried to use it, each time you hit the lap it pushed your blade away. Not a very good setup and wasn't safe IMO. It also wasn't cut straight so it didn't track worth a $hit either. I ended up throwing mine away in short order. If you do a searce you will find a while back this was brought up and the general concenses is that it isn't worth your time or money.

If the object is just to take the burr off after sharpening, get a medium, or hard felt wheel, loaded with green chrome. I have been using one for 20+ years for that purpose. After sharpening on the belt, I make a pass on the felt wheel, burr side first at about a 45 degree angle(edge down). Make a light pass. I usually make another pass at a lessor degree. Repeat on the other side. It makes for a very sharp edge.

you can also just turn an a6 or one of the plastic backed micron belts inside out and use that on a slow speed to strop your blade with. make sure and do it edge down.

A hard leather wheel loaded with Green chrome also works, mine is on a 1750 RPM 1/3 hp motor. A real cheep set up. Gib
