Last sunday the winds off of Ike ripped through here, destroying trees and knocking our power out.

(Our electricity was restored this afternoon.)

Monday, work was cancelled, and I didn't have anything else to do except GET SOME KHUKURI ACTION!

My choice for the job was my first H.I. - the 20" Ang Khola by Kami Kumar, still my go-to khukuri for heavy work.

After an afternoon of heavy use, the edge was still literally razor sharp.

I was going through limbs/branches up to 4" diameter faster than my father could with a chainsaw. Three or maybe four cuts at the most and the branch was removed.
We eventually got into a pattern where I'd go ahead with the AK and he'd follow behind with the chainsaw for the large branches and trunks.

I got some more chopping in yesterday and today.

My 20" AK is still as sharp as it was sunday. I haven't had to even touch it up with the chakma.

There's just no substitute for a good khukuri.

Despite the weight, the much smaller number of strokes needed to sever a limb (hopefully of a tree), make the larger kukris, IMO, easier to use than the small ones. People don't want to believe me that they are faster to use than a hand saw, and yet here you were giving a chainsaw a run for its money!

Excellent!

 I need to get one of those 20"AKs for heavy work. Sounds like the storm didn't disrupt your life too badly, glad to hear it!

Notice how many of those branches were severed with one blow.

Makes me wish I had an HI khuk durin' the great Ice Storm of '98! Thanks fer the pics!

Thanks for the pics. Big choppers are very useful for storm cleanup, as I have found out many times. My Ang Khola is only a 17" one, but it chops pretty well.
