I acquired it on the DotD for 8-20-08 and it arrived yesterday.
Three days! Yangdu ships like the wind
I had more time to test it out today and I'm even more impressed with it.
This khukri is definitely a keeper. It came with an adequate working edge and it quickly took a scalpel edge. The retention of this edge is outstanding. Edge hardness seems to be perfect.
It's very lightweight; possibly the lightest H.I. Khukuri I own. The blade is about 3/8" thick at the bolster.
It's also incredibly fast & agile and the balance is exquisite.
The handle is slimmer than those on my other khukuris, but does not feel weak in any way. This helps make it more manageable for quick movements. It's easy to change direction in mid-swing with this one. It also seems to thrust well too.
Two things to note:
It was listed as having a sisau wood handle. I'm not familiar with Sisau but the handle on this sirupati looks just like saatisal to me. I'm not complaining, as I really like saatisal, but really for what I know saatisal and sisau might look very much alike. Either way, the wood grain and color are very appealing and has an almost blood red color in direct sunlight.
It did not come with the usual karda and chakma set - it came with two kardas, both of different shape, and they had handles which were unstained and a little rough; like a villager finish even though the blades were mirror polished.
No big deal. I put minwax walnut stain on them and now they closely match the sirupati.
Actual measurements:
overall length - 20.25"
blade length - 14.5"
max. blade thickness - about 3/8"
As I posted on an other thread, I really like this sirupati and I should have bought one a long time ago. It's a pleasure to use. Very fast, very agile, great handle, really good cutting power for it's type, and a very graceful appearance. Once again, Royal Master Kami Bura lives up to his well-deserved reputation.
I think this one will be my #2 favorite khukuri. It's a close call. I like it almost as much as my preciouussss - the 21.5" Chitlangi by kami Sher.
