$200 or less: Bowie/Large Knife + Sheath (for hard use)

I'm looking for a "hard use" Bowie or Large Knife in the $200.00 or less price range with a sheath included.

I would like this to be a do-it-all type of outdoors blade. Toughness, chopping ability, batoning, fighting (bonus points if it's a good thrower,) and looks all count!

The reason I'm asking for ideas is because... well, I'm basically a knife enthusiast newbie. I was, and still am, very interested in the Cold Steel Natchez Bowie that will be coming out in SK5, as well as the Buck Hoodlum. I figured I should try to get some opinions here on other, similar knives, in this price range. I don't expect I could get a nice large custom bowie (plus sheath) for $200.00, but if I'm wrong I'm guessing the Blade Forums crowd could tell me.

Help me find my Bowie please :)

I just traded for a Condor Hudson Bay. Not at all fancy, but fits the requirements.

Thanks Foilist, I just checked it out... the Hudson Bay looks capable, but it's a little shorter and less... "nice" looking than what I'd like.

Any of them

Edit: Unless you plan on buying an actual thrower

I have several throwing knives, and I'm always looking for more. I'd like to be have a nice large Bowie (as I described above) that is tough enough to be thrown.

Bowies aren't meant to be thrown, except in movies.

You have to decide if you want a real knife, or a movie prop.

You're gonna get a helluva lot of flak from people here since you want to throw a knife that's not designed as a thrower. With that said, you do what you want with your knife.

I still stand by my recommendations from that other thread. The Blackjacks are convex ground so you'll have a stronger blade profile, at least in theory, since less material is taken off when grinding.

Throwing knives are tempered to a lower hardness then an actual cutting knife. If you throw a knife with a higher RC you're going to have things chip, ding, and possibly break all together. The handle would be first to come off though IMO. In fact most knife throwers recomend that your knife is dull if you're going to throw it.

If done right. A convex can be ground too thin and won't be very strong. I'd recomend the BK9 or Hoodlum myself. The ESEE Junglas would also be a nice one.

Yes, I realize this, but I have yet to read a bad account of Blackjack knives as opposed to the "other" convex knife maker that starts with a B.

Didn't we just have this thread? Oh wait, yes we did.

You're welcome.

Thanks, I hadn't seen this thread. He is looking for about the same thing it seems. OK here's what has been suggested so far (this thread plus the one noted by harkamus) ...

- Cold Steel Natchez Bowie
- Buck Hoodlum
- Condor Hudson Bay
- Becker BK9
- Cold Steel Recon Scout
- Browning Crowell/Barker Competition Knife
- ESEE Junglas
- Blackjack Halo
- Ontario Marine Raider SP10
- SOG Tech Bowie
- Scrapyard Regulator Bowie

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll check out each of these. More?

I like the CS trailmaster more than either the Natchez or recon scout. Go SK5 if you decide on a CS.

dude, dont even lol. if its hard use your looking at then get a cheap ole, united cutlery bushmaster. its cheap, and as far as i can tell the damn thing is near unbreakable, for some reason. perfect for hard use. im sure your going to care if you mess up a $200 bowie, but i doubt your gonna care much about messing up a $37 one. oh, and did i mention the blade alone is almost 13 inches? yeah, theres that.
