I'm looking for a folder that costs $200 or less. I'm currently looking at the Buck/Mayo, which seems like a solid knife that fits my criteria. Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Here are my criteria:
  • Blade length 4" or less (3"-3.5" would be ideal)
  • Suitable for either somewhat dressy occasions and light to medium utility use
  • Metal handles (titanium, aluminum, whatever)
  • Good steel (BG-42, S30V, etc; I know others are great as well, but I just prefer those if I have the option)
  • Forgot to add that it must be manual (autos and balisongs are illegal here in the wonderful state of California)

This should leave more than enough room for suggestions, so fire away! Thanks in advance.

Benchmade 94x series. 154cm on the standard models, but the 940TI has S30V. The benchmade site list this as sold out at the factory, but you might be able to find a dealer who still has one.

I will second the vote for the 94x series. I have a 943 as my EDC and I love it. 154CM is plenty sharp right out of the box and this knife has a liquid smooth action. Another selling point is the rock solid AXIS lock. Just my $0.02

Check some Spydercos with V-10 like a Police or Endura or others.

You can get some nice manual Microtechs (or even an auto) for that price. I don't recall what their steel is called but it definately fits into one of the nicer ones.

Those all have steel or aluminum handles and have a little less than 4" handles.

Outside of your steel parameter, I'd suggest the discontinued Spyderco Lum Tanto which is ATS-55 but I've tested the thing to death and I love the knife. It comes with Titanium or G10 handles. You can get deals on them on the forums or on Ebay or at the Spyderco Seconds sales in Golden Colorado.

Why do you like metal handles? I was just wondering because I prefer metal handles myself.

The 94x series are beautiful, and handle like much larger knives, very ergonomic.

My own favorite in that category, though is the Ka-Bar Bob Dozier Thorn, and at half your target price.

Very strong, aluminum handles, D2 steel, extremely sharp and durable edge, no corrosion on mine through a lot of most ungentlemanly use (no, I didn't stick anyone with it :) ). Same length handle as my small Sebenza and Ralph EDC, but a slightly longer, slimmer blade. Very clever tab lock in place of the more common liner lock/stop pin setup.

Five kershaw Leeks or Three kershaw Blurs or One kershaw Bump. Thats what $200 will buy you. WOW!!!

Heh, I forgot about the 94x series meeting the criteria. I'll have a look at some of those models suggested.

I could get a used Sebenza, but I just sold one off, so I'm going for something a little different.

Haven't seen the Kershaw Bump or Blur yet, but I'll check those out as well.

fulloflead: I don't know why I prefer metal handles, they just have a certain "feel" to them that I seem to like.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Don't forget the amazing Spyderco ATR. Do a search on "ATR" and a number of posts can be found. It has everything that you have requested, plus one of the strongest locks I have ever seen (the new compression lock). You might have to wait a short while, since production is quite slow on these knives.

Compression Lock
All titanium handle
V30 blade

I have to agree with the other posters the 940Ti ot the 941-01Ti. Both have Ti scales and both have S30V steel for the blade so my guess is you can not go wrong with either and they are one heck of a knife.
