I can't decide on my next knife. tying to stay under $200

large, handfilling, hard use

ideas so far:
-ZT 350
-ZT 200
-gayle bradley

If you want a large hand filling knife the 030X would be pretty epic, or there's a NOS 0500 MUDD that, honestly, I think is even better than the 030x models.
To get in your price range though you may have to buy a used 030x.

I'm sure the 0200 would do the job too.

Don't forget the 710.

Manix 2.

Manix 1.

Chinook.

Kershaw Offset.

Skirmish.

Just off the top of my head...

I'd go with the Gayle Bradley, ZT 0200, Emerson Super Commander, or Benchmade 710.

Out of those, I think the Gayle Bradley is the best value.

In my opinion, the 030X is the best value hard use knife. If you look at the materials, the construction, the fit and finish and the execution...this is basically a custom knife for 1/4th the price.

I still think the MUDD is better though. I've never held a folder this solid at any size, any weight.

The 0200 will fill your hand with room to spare, has an extremely comfortable handle, and is just massive. if it is a beater, the blems are quite a bit cheaper then new ones....

Many of the ZT 030X series can be found on the bay for less than $200. It certainly defines "hand filling", though at 8 ounces the thing will really weigh in on your pocket, so I hope you have a good belt and you don't have a lot in said pocket.

Other than that, the Gayle Bradley is an excellent choice provided you can reliably sharpen the steel and that you don't touch anything (organic?) with it, because it's fairly vulnerable to corrosion.

I would check out the Spyderco Assist 1 or Military.

How useful is the Assist for EDC tasks? I kind of want to get one because it's so interesting, but I don't know how useful it will be for me.

I'd love a skirmish... too bad they're hard to find at a decent price now :(

The Mudd isn't all that easy to find either.

Manix 2 looks amazing but I don't think i'd like the lock.

might be stuck with ZT.. not a bad thing ;)

My ZT0200 tears my pocket apart. If I carried the 200 regularly, my pockets would all be literally so frayed that I would have to buy new pants. There are some ways around this from what people have been saying, but they involve modifying the knife. I just ordered a Gayle Bradley for myself, and I'd recommend you do the same.

I kick myself daily for not buying some Skirmishes way back when so I can ebay them now. Their price is at least $100 more than NIB on ebay.

The MUDD is crazy hard to get. Pay attention to the forums and you might luck out...and there is usually an overpriced one (in my opinion) hanging around ebay. But let me tell you, there's just no substitute for the MUDD. All these years I only THOUGHT my folders had no blade play. The MUDD set a new standard.

My roommate has owned 3 Manix 2s and they were all quite good. I think they'd do what you want well. I wouldn't say the Manix 2 is that hardcore though, not like the original Manix. But I'd trust it. The lock sucks for the first week or so, but once you get it worn in it's very convenient.

I haven't owned an 0200, but on my 0302, which uses the same clip and a similar texture (albeit on titanium and not g10) I had no problems. I've seen wild variations on how tight a clip is on the same model, and really the plus side of this is that pocket clip tightness is pretty easy to adjust in person, so I wouldn't be too dissuaded by those concerns.

Take the pocket clip, put a flathead screwdriver underneath, pry it up while having the screws reinforced with something as to not strip them out.

Problem fixed. Never had an 0200 rip my pockets (even my MUDD, just bend the clip out slightly)

They shouldn't be ripped unless you're taking the knife out many, many times per day to open it for fun (because we all do that :p)

Emerson CQC8 or mini CQC8 Horseman knife is a friggin tank

(in before the liner lock complaints) liner lock should never fail under normal use its titanium after all unless you are batoning (improper use)

Probably get crucified for this but, the Cold Steel Recon 1 with the Tri-Ad lock would also be a good choice.
