2000, or newer?

Quick question for your opinions:

My 14 yr. old son and I are going to start scuba diving, getting lessons and certification this month.

I will of course use this opportunity to buy more knives!

I always thought that I'd get a Seal 2000 for diving, but now the new Seal Team is also available--any reason to get one versus the other? (I could end up with both, or one for me, one for him!)

Clearly they both fit the bill, but I thought someone would have used one or the other for diving purposes . . . thanks!

They're both very similar. The Seal 2000 is heat treated and made in Seki City Japan, and uses AUS6 steel. The Seal Team uses AUS8 steel and has the extended tang which can be used as a hammer.

AUS6 should be a little more corrosion resistant. The AUS8 steel should be able to hold an edge longer. There shouldn't be much real world differences between the two.

I think you'll do good with either one. Hope that helps :)

johnu2, thanks--other than design differences, I wasn't sure about the advantages of one over the other.

I don't plan to dive a lot, but initially will be doing some to get certified, open water, etc. Then maybe a trip or two over the next year to enjoy it with the son; then we'll see how it goes from there.

I'm assuming that I could use an AUS6 blade and keep it clean, but realize that AUS8 may be easier.

Thanks for the info--I may well indeed getting one of each! I've always hankered after the 2000, and might just pick it up to say I have one.

We'll see :D

One suggestion: get one of each, use 'em hard, then let us'all know the pro's and con's of each.....

Cheers,

Carl

Actually, Carl, I think I will!

Since I wanted the 2000 anyway, and the son will also need one but isn't aware (yet :D) of the finer points of knife addiction, that is what I plan on.

I'll definitely get back here with some initial impressions when we start.

I've read that Aus 6 (Seal 2000) holds up better to salty water than Aus 8 (seal team elite). If you were to use the knife for diving I thing the seal 2k would be for you. :D
