I didn't do anything when I broke the 1000 mark, so I figure it's time to pony up.

The contest:

Post either an easy one pot meal or some type of "iron ration" that can be made at home and carried on the trail.

I want recipes that are useful and practical for the outdoors, so the more simple the better.

The prize:

Will be an Edge Pro Apex complete system.

This one is slightly used (maybe 5 or 6 times) but still has everything and is in good shape. I thought someone else could get more use out of it.

Judging:

I will have my son to pick a number between 1 and _ (however many posts there are), and that will be the winner. Each person can post as often as they like, but each post must include a recipe or the post and poster will be disqualified if that number is picked.

The winner will be chosen on Oct. 16th.

Begin!!!

One Pot Curried Rice & Beans: (serves one)

- 2 cups parboiled rice
- 1 cup dried diced onions
- 1 cup dried diced carrots
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 2 tablespoons ground tumeric
- 2 tablespoons ground chili powder
- 1 teaspoon coarse salt
- 2 cups dehydrated kidney beans

mix everything into ziploc, and double bag for transport

at camp or on trail, boil 3 cups or so of water and remove from heat when rapidly boiling. Pour in bag of ingredients and stir, then cover and let rest. Stir occasionally. Serve when no more water present and all ingredients have plumped out. Top with grated cheddar

Alpo- Lived on it in college.

About 4 cups of mashed potatoes
1 jar of store bought yellow gravy
1 pound of browned ground beef.

Mix the gravy and meet, and pour it on the potatoes. Makes a yummy mess we called Alpo.

Walking talco's!

Heat up your favorite chili, dump it in a bag of Frito's corn chips. Add a handfull of shredded cheese to taste. Use one of the small half cans of chili and a small snack/personal bag of frito's.

You can heat the chili directly in the can, negating the need for a pot. Or if you have a lightweight titanium pot, empty the chili into a ziploc bag to save some weight.

If you are out backpacking and weight is really a concern, you can always freeze dry the chili too.

GORP!!!
Granola, Oats, Raisins, and Peanuts

* 1 cup salted peanuts or dried roasted peanuts
* 1 cup raisins

Mix in a Zip lock bag and eat on the trail.

Energy Balls

Nothing re-charges the body and encourages tired hikers faster than a quick snack on the trail. Try these "energy balls".

Mix together
* 1 cup chopped dates
* 1/2 cup peanut butter,
* 1 3/4 cups chopped figs, and
* 1 cup chopped apricots.

Roll into balls. Recipe should make about 33 servings, each weighing 0.9 oz.
(Calories per serving: 72; shelf life: 14 days.)
ignore the name these are from my archives in my hard drive:D

Ultra light Joe's moose goo. not my recipe, so you may want to exclude this from the draw. I'll be back latter with more.

* 2 parts honey
* 2 parts corn flour (NOT corn meal!)
* 1 part peanut butter (preservative-laden)
* Mix thoroughly, will take some time.
* Pack into Coghlan's Squeeze Tube (REI, Campmor, etc), or in cold weather wrap in wax paper.

spread on tortillas

Tree Bark

pour a mix of Gorp (dried granola, raisins, cranberries, sunflowers seeds, ground flaxseed onto a waxpaper coated pan. get as much into the pan as possible.

heat up SEMI-SWEET BAKERS chocolate until smooth and pour onto the pan, covering the gorp mix. Let cool for several hours then score lines and break it up. bag it. The bakers chocolate should not melt after this.

Real simple

INSTANT POTATO CORN CHOWDER

1/8 c. dried chopped celery
1 1/2 c. dried onions
2 tbsp. butter or vegetable oil
2 c. water
2 tsp. instant chicken bouillon
1/2 tsp. pepper
1 c. instant mashed potato flakes
15 oz. can whole corn, drained
1 c. condensed milk

In large saucepan, cook and stir celery and onions in butter until tender. Add water, bouillon, and pepper. Cook until bouillon is dissolved. Remove from heat. Stir in potato flakes and corn until blended. Add half & half; return to heat. Heat gently, stirring frequently - do not boil. Makes approximately 4 cups. Delicious!

You can make this with fresher ingredients or foraged herbs, onion grass wild garlic etc....

Im hypoglycemic. My blood sugar plummets. I like to carry a baggie of dry roasted peanuts with a few m&ms tossed in. Dont overdo it on the m&ms .

It's not a pot, but I hope it still counts:

Fish Fillets (preferably catch your own in the field- if its me I bring somebody to catch it for me)
Head of garlic (or a couple of cloves if you are a wuss)
Dry rice
Peppers (I use red and green) or lemon sliced into rounds or fresh greens (arrowroot, skunk cabbage...)
Spices to taste
Tin foil

Put everything in the tin foil and put it in hot coals, over a grill, or however you want. The juices in the fish and veggies cook the rice it absorbs the water, leaving everything the right texture and consistency, and with fish it seems that everything is done at the same time. The only things that have a limited lifespan is the peppers, but you can change them with carrots or other sturdy veggies.

!!!!Do not count this for the drawing, I already have an edge pro!!!

just to share

take hardtack (in this case sailor boy pilot bread)
broiled or microwaved pepperoni (get it to the point where it's almost crunchy)
home made pizza sauce (or substitute spaghetti sauce)
1 block of american or mozzarella cheese

if you haven't guessed yet, we're making mini pizzas on the trail.

who doesn't love pizza when they're starving?! The red hoard that's who! :D

just put the pizza together and heat it up.

you could also make them beforehand without the sauce and simply pour the sauce on the bottom side that way you can have several mini pizzas ready to go very quickly, just top it with the sauce.

another pilot bread delight is cheese and dill, must melt the cheese for full dill flavor.

I generally carry dried or smoked meat with my pilot bread, maybe some cheese. nothing fancy just a lot of protein starch and a good amount of fat.

CAMPFIRE BANNOCK

4 cups flour
8 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
about 3 cups cold water

Mix dry ingredients thoroughly and stir in enough water to make a thick batter that will pour out level. Mix rapidly with spoon until smooth. Pour into large greased frying pan and set on hot coals. Turn when bottom is brown. Cook until no dough sticks to a sliver of wood poked into the middle.

thanks for the chance quietmike & son ;)

nothing new but I personally like making my own batch of trail-mix,
whatever is handy (or I remember to buy), put in a suitable container,
pot/tupperware/baggie. I make a big patch that lasts:

any type granola
available nuts
dried fruit (raisins or craysins are my fav)

it's my energy food, my emergency food,
my main meal or my snack.

I also want to try bringing packs of "honey" like
you get in fast food places, I read a thread here
about it, for easy carry and a quick burst of cals.

Baggie Omletts!

1 ziploc baggie
2-3 eggs (depending how hungry you are)
bell pepper (diced/chopped)
Diced onion
Pre-cooked meat of your choice (ham/bacon/jerky)

Scramble the eggs, mix all the ingredients together in the baggie, seal the baggie, boil the whole thing in water.

Presto!

Baggie Omlett!

(The cool thing about this is that you don't have to clean/carry a pan with you into the field)

Enjoy!

my trail mix:

Craisins
Golden Raisins
Peanuts
Dark Chocolate M&M's
Dried Apricots
Dried Peaches

Next time I make it I will also add chopped beef jerky and Banana chips.

I know this sounds bizarre, but it's pretty good.

Ramen noodles
Vienna sausage
shredded cheese-mozz or parm
Italian house dressing

Cook and drain noodles (without sodium death packet).
Sprinkle a little of the death packet over noodles, not very much.
Cut up sausage and put on noodles
Cover with cheese and sprinkle dressing over the whole mess. Not too much dressing.

Sounds weird, but don't knock it till you try it.

This may seem like a lot of ingredients but if you prepare the spices before hand it cuts down on A LOT of time.

2 pounds ground beef chuck
1 pound bulk Italian sausage
3 (15 ounce) cans chili beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can chili beans in spicy sauce
2 (28 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with juice
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 large yellow onion, chopped
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 green chile peppers, seeded and chopped
1 tablespoon bacon bits
4 cubes beef bouillon
1/2 cup beer
1/4 cup chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 (8 ounce) package shredded Cheddar cheese

Cook the meat then mix everything together. Let it cook for at least two hours and your good!

Beefy Noodle Bowl

3 Tbsp beef jerky, shredded
1 3-ounce package ramen noodles
1 1-ounce package instant onion soup
2 Tbsp dehydrated mixed vegetables
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp dried cilantro
soy sauce to taste

At home: discard the flavor packet from the ramen noodles, and combine all of the dry ingredients in a quart size, freezer zip lock bag.

In camp: boil about 2 cups of water. Add water to zip lock bag, then stir well until noodles are soft and vegetables are rehydrated. Season with soy sauce to taste.
Makes 2 servings
