The other day, I requested info on the Commander on the old SureFire forum (http://186thousand.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=44;t=000008). I rec'd these two negative comments:

"The only outstanding issue with Emerson knives is edge brittleness, but as a slasher/cutter/thruster, its a good design and good value."

"for a knife that's supposed to be "#1 hard use knife" the liners are a joke. knives costing almost half as much have smoother operation."

Are these comments true of the 2002 Commander?

Lynn,

I've got a 2002 Super commander, and though it's not the same size as a 2002 commander, it is built with all the new spec's as the 2002 regular sized commander. Mine locks up very tight, with no blade play. I don't do "Spine Whacks" but I do press pretty hard on the spine of the blade to see if the lock will hold. Mine seems very stout, without a hint of any lock failure. Also the new blade grind ads more heft to the blade making for a very stout knife. I've owned several commanders over the last few years, among a lot of other EKI products, and have never had a problem with any of them.

My 2002 Commander is awesome, solid lock up, smooth action. Also, a major selling point for me was the Wave. I do not know how the 2002s compare to a 1998 through 2001 but my 2002 Commander is one heck of a knife and I would not hestitate to buy another one. That being said, it is hard to appreciate another companies liner lock once you have owned a Strider folder (Lynn, I know you own an AR). I basically got a Commander because the Strider AR was too huge (in my opinion) for EDC. I would say, get a 2002 Commander and you will like it.

You know, I get the feeling that the guy that wrote, "for a knife that's supposed to be "#1 hard use knife" the liners are a joke. knives costing almost half as much have smoother operation." has a bit of an agenda going there.

My AR will remain my EDC. The Commander, if &/or when I buy it, will be for those times when I need a smaller, more PC knife. I have a feeling the liners will be perfectly adequate. That said, it is very likely that I will buy a Commander in the next month or so.

Lynn,

If you're looking for a smaller knife, you may also want to look at a mini commander. It packs all the features of a 2002 full size commander in a nice smaller "PC" size.

Brian, I thought of that. I have my old BM Stryker and a large Sebenza. They're both about the same size as a Mini Commander. After carrying an AR, that's just a bit TOO small. I think a full size Commander will work fine.

one thing's fer sure, Lynn--when you get yor Commander, you won't regret it a bit. i had to pay full retail for mine. it hurt at the time, but i've never regreted it.
happy waveing to ya:) :) :)

The "edge brittleness" comment kinda throws me some. What the hell are they talking about? Not once have I seen an edge brittleness issue.

On "smoother liner operation", well, yeh there is something there.

On many EKI knives the liner lock can be sticky when closing. But . . . is that a bad thing?

What's the one big fear with folders? Why do people insist on whacking the spines? (I not a bigger "whacker" :D)

People are fearful that the liner will fail and the knife will collapse on thier hand. Well guess what guys? They leave the face a little rough. If they polished it, there is a greater chance the lock would slide across the face and close.

My personal opinion is that it is much more important to deploy a defensive folder quickly ("The Wave") and have the knife stay open while I'm using it. I'll take my friggin' time putting it away when I'm done with it.

If I wanted to "speed close" my knife, I'd go buy an Axis lock.

Good point, John. It's always amused me a bit when people complain about a given liner lock over-engaging.

Never been a QC issue with me.

I've had my '02 Commander for about a month now. I'm happy with it thus far but I haven't done any serious cutting with it yet. Haven't had the oppurtunity. QC is not a problem on mine.

Liner engages a little too far to the right for a knife that is pretty much brand new but this is to be expected from a knife that gets 'waved' open all the time.

I had some QC problems with a '98 CQC7 but my '02 Commander is great. Replaced my AFCK as EDC.

I love Emersons. However, smoothness is not their forte. Even my 5yr. Commander is not as smooth as the CRKT KFF Pro. May sound like blasphemy, but its the truth. However, I think if smoothness is that large of a concern you are missing the point of Emerson knives. They are tough. While I would like the thicker liners of the '98, there is nothing wrong with the current ones. Look at the liners of any number of major brands (benchmade for instance) and they are the same thickness. I have 4 Emersons at the moment and the lock up on all of them is secure. These are SD blades for me and I won't carry something I don't trust for SD.

you'll hardly get objective opinions in the emerson forum!:D they aren't known for fit and finish. nor smoothness. the price is high. they're rather utilitarian and "rough". if you want to pay $160 for it more power to ya!

okay, just saw the agenda part. if somebody is opinionated they have an "agenda"? dude, don't forget YOU asked. if you didn't want to hear what people have to say you shouldn't have.

simple 6, tkl, or whatever you want to be called here, are you stalking me? If so, you must be really bored.

You could give it a rest. If I felt like you do about Emersons, I think I might just hang out in a forum that had to do with a knife that I actually liked. I might just hang out in a forum where I could actually have a positive effect. When I see your posts here:

and here:

I get the feeling you enjoy the forums for a different reason than most of us. I get the feeling you don't like being part of the solution. You seem to enjoy stirring things up.

There's a word for people like that. I'm sure you know the word.

ROTFLMFAO!! :D:D

Lynn, you hit the nail on the head there buddy. :D
