This has got to be the best seminar Master Bram Frank ever gave in Israel.

Bram came with Frank Olsen (AKA the man behind Skunk-works – some of the best sheathes in the business) Steve (Tiny) and Greg – all of which are certified Gunting freaks.

The seminar was sponsored by Scorpio (Guy Rafaeli) and his partner Yuval – both of which are Gunting and Arnis instructors.

I think it was a huge success – and with 46 participants - 11 of whom came from the USA, Canada, England and Ireland – I doubt anyone would argue otherwise.

I believe this was the largest group ever to assemble outside the US for Gunting and general blade-craft practice under the tuition and supervision Of Bram - and just like last year – we had the great fortune to receive the hospitality of Master Dennis Hanover (Prof.) - the head of the “Dennis Hisardut” system.

We used his Dojo for two days – and walked together to the close by mall to have lunch - all 46 of us…

Imagine a group of sweaty knife carrying guys enter the peaceful mall and you start to get the picture...

Needless to say – most of the Israelis in the group also carry guns with them…suffice to say it was a very secure mall once we sat down for lunch…

The seminar was a two-day affair – and during the first day we practiced general knife work including empty hand techniques, hand - to knife and knife to knife. As usual - It was a lot of fun, and Bram's demonstrations were clear, insightful and funny.

It was somewhat less funny the next day (especially from my POV) cause I had volunteered to be the one demonstrated upon…AKA – to be Gunted…

I will admit to suffering “a mild amount of pain”…but this is probably the best way to learn…

It wasn’t as bad as last year – but it was plenty painful just the same…some of the guys have taken images of me in the hit of the demo – and although I look like I am laughing - I am not - I am yelling…

Bram was effected by the situation in Israel – and was far less PC on this seminar than he had in previous years - he also mentioned the late Master (Professor) Remi Preas asking him to teach “The old way” – so we got a lot of gutting, throat cutting and other educational and less-then-PC techniques demonstrated and taught…

This was a big change from the usual - bio-mechanical cutting Bram advocates – and it did feel different - and new. But at the same time – those old techniques were so much closer to the origins of Arnis – anyone with any experience in Arnis or other forms of Chinese MA – could find “his” system in them…

We had an interesting discussion on one of the breaks – and I recall Bram saying – all the Philippine MA are basically derivatives of Chinese King Fu – and even I could see the routs and similarities the old Arnis had with the Chinese MA I am familiar with.

On Friday evening the foreign guests – along with Guy, Yuval and their lovely wives were my guests for BBQ at my house – and I can tell you – feeding these hungry-tired-knife-fighters was a true challenge – and my wife Cecile was well up to it – sending everybody to their hotel well fed and duly drunk…

I can’t wait till nest year…

Gadi: dinner @ your house was excellent and Cecile actually seemed glad to see me...She seems to forgive me that I don't do Tai Chi and I might teach you the dark side pof the force...( Private joke!)
and I was impressed that she came to see us train later in the park..
very cool.
yes this was a great Commandments...
We had good participation and the follow up seminars were just as well attended...
Of course as Avi Mor said..this is the time for those who are friends of Israel to stand up and be noticed..
I always go to Israel and I will continue to do so..To teach my friends and family what is needed to survive the terror of the bad guys..
yes.. I was very UN-PC this time..
Yes..I taught old style Filipino cutting..
simple, direct..to the point..
engage, counter, move on...
yet within it was all the same biomechanical that I always teach..
Modern Arnis' soul is self-defense, to give the oppressed the means & way to rid of terror and fear..
I give that from my teaching of Arnis to my family in Israel..
From Professor Presas to me to all of you @ the Commandments...

Guy, Yuval and Dennis were all wonderful..as were you and your family..You made me feel @ home and as usual the 2 weeks passed very quickly..

Be safe..
Thank you for everything..

Bram

"...and thank you Gadi for being the Dummy and saving my own arm.

OK thanks Yuval!!!
I had a good time with Moshe's people, Bennys and Dennis'....
of course ours @ the Commandments were cool..
Gadi..You were great to volunteer for the Guntig part ..but we didn't GUNT alot this year..we cut..
OK we cut alot..

Bram!

I am yours to be Gunted whenever you need.

just make sure you use the red or blue and NOT the black...

It was truely awesome. What a setting for blade work. As Bram has stated elsewhere, thanks Jim for your hard work in pioneering this kind of event. It could not have happened without your "breaking trail". When you take people out of their everyday, normal enviornment I think they become more inclined to learning new concepts. May the Riddle be back soon.

Israel is the perfect setting for working with steel. Think about all the different blades that must be hidden there in the ground, or have decomposed becoming a very part of the soil. Hittites, Akadians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Assyrians, the Mighty men of David, the sons of Isachar, Phillistines, Romans, Phonicians, Mamelukes, Crusaders; the list could go on for pages.

It was a true honor to be a guest in Israel. These are the most hospitable people I have ever met. The cusine is beyond aclaim. Thanks Gadi for your dinner and for taking on the role of cutting dummy for Bram. Frank, Steve and I really appreciated it! :D Thank you Guy, Yuval & Neomy, you are simply the best, and best of friends.

We hope to see you next year, and to anyone who wants to have a blade experience of a lifetime, start preparing now for June 2003. It will be even bigger.

P.S. Gadi, you may want to wash that hat before you wear it. ;)

"P.S. Gadi, you may want to wash that hat before you wear it."

WASH? I had it sterilized...:D

It was great having you guys over...the BBQ is still smoking...ready for next time..

Hey Greg,
it was great having you here, and thank you for all the help.
i'm sorry you missed the visit to see my collection but that way
you have something new for next time.
i hope you had a deacent flight back home.
see you soon,
scorpio.

We should have full sets of Abaniko trainers for next year..then everyone can slice n dice the fixed Gunting way...
We should also have TUSOKs ..I hope by next Commandments..or at least a few protos..
And I think we'll actually do some GLADIUS work to add to the historical affect of the Commandments...maybe old Egyptian - Hittite
sword work...The British Museum was kind enough to send me files and copies of the walls of Beni Hasen...

be safe all of you..

Bram
