I had the distinct pleasure of attending the annual ABS banquet dinner and auction this year at the Blade Show in Atlanta. During the banquet, numerous members were recognized for their contributions to the organization and to the craft of the forged knife, and new Journeyman Smiths and Master Smiths received their certificates.

It was a wonderful sight to see, as these talented bladesmiths were honored for their achievements and accepted their new certificates before an audience of their friends, their peers, and their supporters.

After the awards and honors, the ABS held an auction to benefit the endowment, where dozens of donated items were sold to the patrons. Included among these items were an exceptionally crafted fireplace set by Charles Smale, a beautiful ram's head fire poker forged by James Batson, and all five Journeyman test knives generously donated by Dan Farr.

I tried to buy the fire-poker, but lost out to one very tenacious bidder who just wouldn't quit. ;) I also tried to buy a few of Dan Farr's knives, all of which were top-notch, but kept getting outbid by his brother, who was determined to bring those family heirlooms back home.

But I didn't leave empty handed. Towards the end of the evening, a gorgeous damascus bowie came up for auction. The knife was made by five Mastersmiths at the ABS West hammer-in, and I just had to go after it. Lucky for me, most of the participants had already spent their money at that point, and I was able to buy the knife for far less than I should have.

I had the knife photographed by PointSeven Studios, and, without further ado, here it is:

The makers:
Red St. Cyr, M.S. (2000) - damascus (hand hammered!)
Jame Batson, M.S. (1993) - forging
Greg Neely, M.S. (1993) - grinding
Charles Ochs III, M.S. (1989) - heat-treating
Scott Taylor, M.S. (2002) - handle, finishing

I still can't get over the generosity shown by those who donated items to the auction. There really was some excellent booty, and it's a testament to the good nature of the members and supporters of the ABS. I'm already looking forward to next year's event, and I hope to see you there!

Glad to see that you wiped my drool off of that sweet bowie! :D

Man, what a gorgeous random pattern blade!

That is beautiful. With five of the masters working on it, how could you go wrong?!

Beautiful knife Wulf and great post too. What's the handle material? I thought that was a real classy move by Dan Farr, donating his JS test knives. And that was an equally classy move by his brother trying to buy them back.

Hope to see you there next year.

Cheers,

Roger

Words cannot describe how nice that knife is.

Wulf,

Once again, great knife. The thing is truly amazing and would make a fine centerpiece to most any collection. Glad to see the photos came out so nice. Truly do the knife some justice, as is deserved.

BTW folks, check out the back of the sheath. Wulf had the foresight to round up the contributing smith's and get them each to sign the sheath. Classy move and the icing on a very fine piece of cake.

As the "very tenacious bidder" Wulf referred to above, I thought I'd post an image of the Jim Batson Ram's Head Poker which I recently won during the ABS banquet/auction at the BLADE Show in Atlanta.

Wulf and I didn't know each other when we got into this "bidding war" but the next day he approached the table where I was displaying an interesting set of William Scagel knives from my collection, graciously introduced himself and we had a good laugh over the events of the previous evening. The Master Smiths' collaboration knife could not have gone to a nicer gentleman--but I got the poker!:p

Buddy - thanks for posting that picture! You know, a lot of people don't realize how incredibly talented Mr. Batson is with hammer and steel. The man is not only a Master Bladesmith, but also a blacksmith extraordinaire. That's a gorgeous fire-poker and I'm glad it went home with such a good guy.

Once again - a real pleasure meeting you.

Wulf & HTMD,

WOW, The both of you guys came home with a great piece. I wonder how long it took to forge that ram's head. Even with all his experience it still looks like something that took a great deal of effort.

Point Seven did a great job with your photo, you can see all the details in the blade. No wonder they were swamped with work the whole weekend. I can hardly wait to get my CD!

Beautiful knife Derrick! Even better story!!!

I hadn't gotten a chance to see that knife up close yet...it's a lot like the one I made for Danbo, but with a shorter damascus blade...I LOVE IT! (No, I'm NOT trying to put myself in the same boat as those smiths!!!!)

That Ram's head fire poker is SWEET! I'm going to start exploring some more possibilities beings as I have hammers and hot steel in my shop already.

Great thread Derrick!!! :D

This is a fire poker I made. Granted, it was the first real implement I've ever actually forged to completion, but man, do I ever feel humble :o
