With 2008 knocking on the door we also find the 6th Annual American Bladesmith Expo fast approaching. However this years Expo is full of change. Not only is the Expo different but the people who run the Expo are different. The A.B.S. Expo is now being run by six full time highly respected full-time knife makers who over the years have seen ideas for shows come and go. 2008's Expo is a culmination of the success and failures these makers have experienced and observed throughout their careers.

The 2008 A.B.S. Expo is dependent on the participation of the attending makers and collectors alike. Friday January 25th, the first day of the Expo, has been dedicated to educating collectors and makers alike with seminars taught by makers, collectors, writers, and knife enthusiasts. Friday will be a day in which interaction between the makers and collectors is the key focus.

A collectors corner will also be set up where you the collector is encouraged to bring up to 3 knives to show, sell, or trade. This corner gives you a chance to see even more great knives and maybe update your collection by exchanging or selling some of your own knives.

Saturday will begin with a chance for all collectors to preview the knives that are about to be for sale. This will allow collectors the chance to get around the room and view the knives that are being presented for sale without having to rush into a decision. There may be some makers that choose to sell some of their knives using a lottery system to further level the playing field. This will be done at the makers discretion and will not be found at every table. In other shows collectors have complained that they travel a great distance and then don't get a fair chance to buy the knives they really wanted.

As you can see the 2008 A.B.S Expo has been designed to enhance the collectors experience. Much more information can be found at the official Expo website at http://absknifeexpo.com/ To learn more information about the show format please click on "show format" following the third paragraph on the Expo home page. This will explain in detail each facet of the Expo.

If you are a knife enthusiast the 2008 Expo is where you need to be in January. Use this event as a way to educate yourself about the art that you have acquired a taste for. Come share your passion for knives, meet interesting and genuine people, and experience some of the finest knives in the world.

I look forward to seeing you in January.

Would love to go, but not this year. I may go when it starts being held in San Antonio. It's farther away, but is a city that I like much more than Reno.

Is there still a VIP system? I.e., are there VIP invites available, and what does it entail?

Thanks,

JD

OK, I'm 90% decided to go, maybe even just one night, flying in Friday, and out Saturday pm.

Who else is going? Anyone going to the ABS banquet?

I'm there...and will be at the banquet......we could go out to eat beforehand if you want, the food sucks...the auction is AWESOME...lotta fun.

Pete, my business partner, that you met at BladeWest is coming Friday, and flying out Saturday afternoon...I just booked on SouthWest for the same trip you would be taking, and it was $130.00 round trip.

Yes, I was looking at Alaska, and it was $170. Not bad. Never tried SouthWest...

Alaska offers a fine deal...I would take that....Southwest has this "no reserved seat" thing, which can be frustrating. I wonder what Fogg Sensei will bring this year??

i have never been to a knife show and would like to treat myself to one. is the upcoming Reno show THE ONE to attend, or are there others which you would recommend for someone to attend who may only get to 1 knife show in his life ? and, will Reno have folders as well as fixed blades ? shows in western U.S.A. are easiest for me to get to via Spokane WA. thanks, roland

Reno is 100% forged blades, and only ABS members. That excludes all the stainless makers, which are arguably as or more numerous than bladesmiths.

The show is not huge, and the average quality is extremely high, maybe one of the top 3 shows in terms of average quality ... and therefore generally high prices.

My experience is that fixed blade knives represent at least 80% of the offering, if not more. Also, the patterns are heavily weighted towards traditional blades: bowies, hunters, a few daggers, some traditional folders, etc. You can count on some very different stuff from a few makers (D. Mirabile, L. Fuegen, D. Winkler,...), but it is still a generally traditional offering. In all likelihood there will be very little, if any, tactical stuff.

For my interest, it's one of the best show, and from the Pac NW, it is the clear best value, very cheap to go, high "return" potential.

If you were going to only one show, Blade in Atlanta might be a better choice given that this is the place where you'll find EVERYTHING, but of course there's both great and crappy stuff, and it's expensive in $ and time to go there from the Pac NW.

I would actually recommend the OKCA show in Eugene...it is, and has always been, a buyer's show, and there are many, many folders there, as well as a vast array of prices.

thanks for info re: Reno, Atlanta & Eugene. the Eugene OKCA show April 12 & 13 sounds good as i could drive there in 1 (long)day. are there some high end knives here as one would see in Reno and Atlanta ? roland

There might be *some* high end knives in Eugene, but each time I was there, the average quality was very low. The problem is that you'll get few world class makers, and that they will not bring their very best. Competing with them are hundreds of small dealers selling anything from decent to amateurish customs, and high quality to junk production. Even though it's a fairly convenient show for me (I live in Seattle), I've resolved not to waste time there anymore.

To be faire, one thing you'll find at OKCA and not at Reno are dealers, who will often have a pretty good assortment of stuff. Some of those dealers are not super sophisticated, and if you're knowledgeable & diligent you can find some gems sold at a steep discount.

Joss, I attended OKCA with my "lack of sophistication" for 11 years as a dealer....and I am here to categorically tell you....you are wrong!!

Just in my section was Robert Golden with a PHENOMENAL selection of knives, Robert Crowder, Michael Bell, JESS HORN, Don Littman.....Michael brings out some great stuff.

There are many makers who attend and have great stuff...I never left that show without some great pieces. It is vastly better than BladeWest, IMHO.

I said some, not all. I stand by what I said. I agree it might be better than Blade West, but that's not the question.

Do the sales (for makers using the box system) take place at 11am? Reason I ask is that the only flights out of Reno are very early in the afternoon, 2pm-ish...

Joss,

The makers that choose to participate in the "box" system will open their boxes at 11:00. The preview hour will be spent giving the customers time to put their names in the boxes.

By 11:15 you should know if your name has been drawn.

Josh

Thanks Josh. I finally found a flight back that wasn't too early, so I should be OK.

Joss:

So what did you finally find for an airfare? Hell of a long drive for a weekend but I'm also looking at something similar for an instructor's conference in May in Reno too.

Oh yeah, did I miss the dates of this event? (Never mind - need to read better!) January 25th eh?

Wish something like that would come to the Lynnwood or Bellevue convention centers. That would be excellent.
