My 2009 Prairie Dog Safari, to be held in South Dakota, will be underway in exactly three weeks. My cartridge of choice will again be .204 Ruger, loaded with Sierra 32gr BlitzKing bullets and 26.5gr of Reloder 10X powder. My shooting iron will be a Cooper Arms M21 Phoenix with a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40 LR scope. (I may also bring along my M21 MTV with the same scope scope as a backup rifle.)

Best of all, I will be enjoying this Prairie Dog Safari with my dad and with a close friend from Florida who is joining us for the third time. My daughter, who is now nine years old, will accompany me on the 1,400-mile drive from gun-lovin' California to South Dakota. We start the the drive in San Jose early morning on July 9th, and will reach Rawlins, Wyoming that evening. The remaining 300 or so miles will be driven the next morning.

This trip will include a side-trip to Montana for my dad and me, to compete in Cooper Arms' 2009 One-Shot Competition. See: http://www.cooperfirearms.com/News.html

Here is the tally from the 2008 Prairie Dog Safari:

Wow.:thumbup: Very cool idea (painting) and nice shooting. I like that they don't allow spotting scopes. It keeps everything fair.

hey lunde, you all have a great time, what a fathers day celebration, hope that you all win again, love the wolf pic, wolves are one of my favorites.

take care and you all be safe and win big.

Sounds like fun bro, please give us a report afterwards (and don't let your dad beat you at the one shot :) )

Wow. Isn't that late for PD hunting? I recall talking to some GOB's back when I went about 10 years ago that said they hit the fields in late June, early July and got ATTACKED by heat and bugs.

We were in Montana in late May/early June. The rain was a killer (we almost didn't get home one day) but it was pleasant. I wish we saw more dogs, tho.

Good luck, hope you get a bunch. Does seem a little late to me also. Shooting Prarie Dogs is a lot of fun, anyone who knocks it hasn't tried it.

Sounds like a blast.

I've never hunted prarie dogs. Do you do anything with meat or fur?

In exactly two days I will be past the middle of Nevada, on my way to South Dakota. :D

We used to go gopher hunting in Montana with 22's when I was a kid growing up. Those are some of my best memories from back then. I loved shooting those things.

Have fun on your trip.

Les.

You're kidding, right?

Yes he seperates the two from the skeleton. Makes for easy pickens for the Yotes!

We assumed you were going to use one of your Busse Combat Blades to skin and bone-out prairie dogs. Granted, they seem a little large for the task, but maybe that makes the work go faster. A friend of mine has shot over 100 in a day so I guess you need a real fast knife.

The 2009 Prairie Dog Safari got off to a good start on Saturday. This year's event is lower-key than usual, in terms of actual field time, for a couple of reasons. One is that two of us have kids with us, and we spent yesterday visiting two stunning national landmarks/monuments: Devil's Tower in Wyoming and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

The other reason is that BrainOnSigs needs to work up a viable .25-06 hunting load for this October's pronghorn antelope hunt, so some range time is a must. Another reason is that my dad and I need to make sure that our One-Shot Competition rifles are shooting straight. I tested my backup rifle on Saturday morning, and shot a three-shot 100-yard group that measured 3/16" center-to-center.

Mate! Looks like an awesome trip! I always think of that Spielberg film when I see pics of Devil's Tower. Did you see any coloured lights flying around in the sky :)

Sweet pics Lunde, I have to get over there someday with the ladies.

Thanks for sharing
