Hi Everyone,
If I might get your thoughts and advice on a possible purchase. I found a 2011 Burrking 2.5x60 grinder on craig's for $750...huge deal on that. It is fixed (I would eventually hope to get a VFD for it) and I will have to re-wire it for 110v since I don't have 220.

My question is: Right now it is a fixed speed 8000sfmpm. Is that just way too fast for knife making on a 60" belt? I would assume the heat would be insane but I don't know. I am used to the .5 horse 2x42 craftman but its time for an upgrade and 750 just seems like such a steal for something beastly like this. I would also look to retrofit 2 inch wheels to run 2x60s.

What do you guys think of this buy? It worth it for knife making or would it be more of a hassle that it's worth? Bad ass grinders are just so out of my price range right now.

It was used at a metal fab shop family business that is shutting down. Sounds like it is in great condition..still need to go see it in person though. Thanks a bunch for any input.

Price is fair. Condition is important - what does it look like? Not sure you can rewire the existing motor for 1120V. What motor is on it now?

I would get a 1.5HP 3PH motor and VFD for $300-$400 and convert it now. You can run that setup on 120V. I would highly recommend getting 220 out to the shop as soon as possible.

2.5" belts are fine for knifemaking, but require 20% more power due to more contact area. You should be able to get all the normal belts in 2.5X60. With a longer tool arm, a 12" (or larger) contact wheel, or a 10"high flat platen, you could also run 2X72's.

It's a Baldor motor and he said its the dual v motor so should be able to get wired for 110. Seems in fair condition, shop dirt all around..haven't seen it in person..will check it out in person. Over all if it is in good condition and if I can re wire in the meantime for 110..do you guys think it is worth the investment? Burrkings seems to bee pretty stout machines.

Those are metal grinding beasts, but are somewhat limited for knifemaking. As a second grinder to do heavy hogging it is a great deal. As the only grinder you have ... I would think hard before buying.

Thanks for then input guys. I ended up buying it for $650. Felt right. The motor sounded great and the wheels sound good and there is no wear on the soft contact wheel. I feel good. Thanks again.
