Just got a beautiful 2011 BladeForums pattern #85 with caplifter knife. The caplifter does not easily open bottles. Have heard there is a way to fix it, any guidance is appreciated. Such a gorgeous blade, thanks sincerely for your time everyone. If I missed a thread covering this I'm sorry.

Mike, many had the issue you mentioned. I worked mine with a small metal file and it works flawlessly since. Mine was easy to see that it wouldn't grab a cap, so I went a little at a time, would retry on a cap each time until it was perfect:thumbup:

I did mine with a Dremel tool, since scratches don't really bother me. Modified on the left, original on the right.

Thanks so much for the ideas and the picture. I am going to go at it after work and I'll let you know how it turns out.
Again, thanks for your time fellas.

I remember I had the same problem. What you want is hook in there, so that the cap lifter doesn't slip out when prying the cap off.

You need to whip the cap off fast as without the mod it works poorly.

It's more than ironic (and annoying) that GEC did not test these lifters before putting them on the knife as it was one of the attractions having an 'opener'. When you think how all other knives I've had with lifters never give this problem...yet the knife commands such a premium, even my well used one. Well, the blade is well used at least...:D

Has GEC fixed the problem? One should not have to alter a new knife.

Well the ones on Charlie's Radio Jack SFO, which came a couple of years later, work as they should do

Same with me, careful slow work with metal file solved the problem.

Yes, too bad about the original design, but GEC did re-work it on following models like Crownlifters and Beer Scouts; a very handy pattern.

Don't ever buy one of these Camillus-made Remington R3843 scouts. It has a positively terrible cap lifter too.

Update: I don't have the heart (guts) to try the mod. I think I'm gonna move it along. Kind of a bummer, it's such a looker and #85 is my favorite GEC pattern. Too bad they didn't think of testing it before it made it to production...
Thanks again everyone.

Finally gave in and tried it with some small diamond files I had from harbor f. Then cleaned it up with some sandpaper. It only took about 15 minutes and it works great- I've been trying it most of the evening ;) Glad I did it, into the pocket she goes.
Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Waaay too much hook Buzz.
I reckon I could get a beer open with the can opener....if I was thirsty.:)

Thanks mqqn.
Just didn't want to screw it up.
Looks like you handled the order!

The label on the tube is definitely part of the mojo.
