2011 Chuck Buck interview

Thank MT! I enjoyed that especially hearing about the Ranger getting it's name! I think I might know of some of those collector folks; some of my favorite!

I'm glad to see the Ranger story in writing. That's great.

I found this interesting...

S-R: Your Model 110 is one of the most successful knives in history. Who came up with that?

Buck: In 1963, we took three popular knives on the market – a couple of Canadian and one American – and we borrowed all their best features. Then we added brass bolsters and a wooden handle.

Anybody have any idea what the couple of Canadian and one American knife were that were drawn on to create the 110?

Thanks for posting this. I had heard that the 112 had some sort of Navy connection but wasnt sure about the facts.

The story of the Ranger getting it's name is great! Thanks for posting the interview.

That was interesting. I had all sorts of things in mind as to why the knife was named "Ranger". I never would have guessed that!

makes me proud to know the 110 was designed after two Canadian style knives. And an American of course :)

Really great article. Thanks for sharing. This question got me thinking ...

Q: Any leadership decisions you regret?
Buck: "Back when we didn’t know how to make pocketknives, we contracted with a New York company. But their knives weren’t very good. ..."

I wonder which company it was? I'm pretty sure Buck was referring to either Schrade or Camillus, maybe both. From what I understand they first contracted the 300 and 500 series pocketknives in 1966 with Schrade, then switched to Camillus in 1968 before bringing production back to their factory.
