Two nights ago, I decided to pick out a group of EDC knives for 2012. One of the things I have decided is that I am abandoning my slipjoint/leek combo in favor of a slipjoint/fixed blade combo (I am no longer teaching, so I can wear a knife on my hip). My daughter (3) and I spent about two hours looking at knives. I showed her different kinds and what they were meant to do. We cut up some cardboard. We talked about different blade shapes. Then we made the selection. One cigar box of 'regular' knives and one of 'fancy' (Sunday) knives. Francine did the picking. Somehow she got two 'new' knives out of the deal, too. :D An old Buck and a little EO Jack. You can see the selection process and our boxes below. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Very Cool Dan.
I have tried most desperately to get my girls into carrying a neat little pocket knife...I succeeded only one time, and that was with my youngest and that knife was a Spyderco Bug..
edit...ooops pressed enter too soon...
Anyway the girls just are not into it - so I dont push it, at times I get a nice Stag handled knife, or something that may be a little different...and say..."hey what do you think of this knife"..and offer it to them to hold...they always come back with"Dad...it looks like all your other ones....which all look the same"
So I have tried, I can see why little Franci picked the pink handled Trapper...cool knife for her
Merry Christmas Mate, by the way..what are you doing for a job now?

That's some happy stuff happening there. Good memories in the making.

Congrats on quite the selection. The Remington R1173 is a great EDC. I enjoy carrying mine at least once a week, though routinely more frequently than that.

At this rate she'll be carrying a Ka-Bar 1217 by dating age, you won't have to do NOTHIN to get the boys to respect her!

Thanks guys. Yep, she will be a dangerous date. ;)

The Remington is a brilliant knife and was given to me by a member here who is a friend and has excellent taste in knives.

I'm lucky, my daughter loves knives and fishing. And motorcycles. And disney princesses and ballet. ;) She is really good with knives. I never would have thought I would be giving a 3 year old pocket knives, but she is smart and knows to respect them. Freaks my wife out. She'll cut herself one of these days, but it hasn't happened yet. I try to explain to my wife that it is a right of passage.

Duncan, I got a Spyderco Bug for her too, but that thing is SHARP. I let her play with that under CLOSE supervision. As to the working, I am writing full time now. If you're interested in the specifics, PM me. I can't afford another infraction.

Sorry for the crappy pics. I've got some good stuff to put up later. I'll get decent pics. Right now, I need to take the little one to the park. Happy NY guys.

Yeah, I cut myself all the time and it's because I'm too comfortable with my knives.
I just don't think when I'm playing with 'em, live and learn though. I hope your daughter can learn from someone else's mistakes before she has to teach herself a new knife lesson.

Terrific memories in the making! Thanks for sharing, and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Happy New years! I don't cut myself often, but when I do I make it count. My daughter is far smarter than I am. :)

Thanks for sharing this with us, Dan. My wife and I don't have children but when I see this type of thing it makes me wish we did.

Good stuff.

Looks like a great time! It's always good to see people teaching children the proper way to use and respect pocket knives, no matter what age they are. We need to pass it on to the next generation just like our fathers and grandfathers did.

lovely! good post mate.
hope you have a great year 2012.

It is a right of passage, for centuries boys (in this case girls) would feel like they were well on their way to manhood (womanhood) when dear old Dad got them their first pocketknife. It gives them something to look foreward to that's not too far into the future. Tell your wife that.

She's doing well, the young padawan is. :D

Thanks guys. I'm proud of her for lots of reasons and this is one of them.

Tim, I'm a poseur. Smoked cigarettes for a decade, but never cigars. Just liked the box. But I'm glad it's a good one. :)

Oh haha yea my other hobby besides knives of course includes cigars/ lighters; don't take up cigars if you quit cigs though, could lead back to cigs lol! Happy new year!

No worries on that brother. I quit smoking cigs when I got pneumonia. Coughing up blood for a month. I hold my breath when I walk past a cigarette now. LOL :)

That's cool! My daughter is five, and is getting closer to an age where she could responsibly have her own knife. She can use scissors and such safely without close supervision, but she is not quite there yet for a knife. I'd like to get her a SAK when the time comes.

Other than hurting herself, a big concern is that she would lose it in about three minutes!
