All,
Orders for the proposed using version 113 have been lagging significantly behind what is needed in order for this knife to become a reality. I hope orders pick-up in order that the club will be able to follow through with the project - partly because I want one in my collection! As a reminder, the knife has a brass bolster and ironwood handle with suede leather lanyard and is fitted with a 13C26 Sandvik steel blade. The knife is offered on page 11 of the BCCI June newsletter. The gold etch version is also a fantastic knife with the elk and ironwood combination handle.

Hi Larry,

I would like to have one of each knife. However, they have been priced out of most members price range IMHO. Take a standard 113, I can find one on-line for $50 any day. So the base price of $50 + $20 for the steel upgrade and + $20 for the ironwood and I,m a buyer at $90 any day. I'm also a Buyer of the club yearly knife at $125. The last few years the price of these knives has left me wishing for the days of the past. Everyone has taken a hit with today's economic issues and has less $$$ to spend not more. I love S30V and would have one of the AG113's, but, they also priced them right out of the reality market!

Maybe I'm the only one here who thinks the way I do. I'd sure like to hear others thoughts on the above.

With all due respect to the officers of the BCCI and all their thankless (and unpaid) efforts on the memberships behalf, I have to agree with John. I can afford the prices, but for me, the value just isn't there for the price.

I didn't buy either one last year either. The members only knife mainly because of the near $200 price tag  and the user 112 somewhat because of the price but mostly because I just flat don't like paperstone. :thumbdn:

My apologies if I offend them by saying so. :o

Overpriced for what they are,so is the alaskan guide series knives, over here in Canada they want $179.99 plus taxes and shipping for the ag 113...thats well over $200 for a user hunting knife, sorry but i'm not spending that kind of money on a regular hunting knife,i can afford it ,but like mentioned there is no way i'm seeing the value there.

I feel a little out of place here.

Usually I'm the first one who causes a fuss by pointing out that the emperor has a bare butt.

Now here I am just agreeing.

Oh well.

Yes, it's a nice little knife, but they are clearly asking about $40 above what it's worth. I like the Sandvik steel and I love Desert Ironwood......but this IS basically a mass-produced knife.

While I admittedly, do not participate to the level of many of the regulars here, I also agree with the general feeling about club offerings.

I have been disappointed more than pleased with recent purchases and there have not been any offerings of late that have tempted me to participate.

How is this project going now?

I placed an order for the Sandvik/Ironwood one, simply because I'd like to have it as a user. The price is a little high, but that's par for a custom designed limited edition. I'm sure it will be a fine knife if it is produced.

Will we get notification if it is not produced? I have yet to send in a check pending the outcome.

The price of a small 5X5X4 inch block of desert ironwood is now $80. where I live. It's just the way things are going. Quality is going to cost more from here on.

5x5x4 will yield enough 113 scales for 8 - 10 knives. That's about $8 - $10 for the scale material per knife, about 1/2 the cost I stated above.

Yes, but in any hand craft, it has to be worked, so the actual price per piece is higher than the raw material. Often times in hand work, the cost of materials is such a small percentage of the labor cost (and in this case, operations costs or "overhead" as well), you might as well use the finest materials, specifically with regard to limited editions - limited production runs.

I agree with you that the cost increases in the last few years are significant. The BCCI 112s were quite a bit more expensive than the BCCI 110s of a couple years ago. My only point is that I believe this is a trend that we won't likely see reversing in any significant way.

Then the "not buying" trend will not reverse in any significant way, either.

Maybe true. If the Sandvik 113 was $90. I would have ordered two or three. But at this price I ordered only one.

I guess they could have made it cheaper by using stock 420HC instead of prepping a new steel for the 113, but that wouldn't be as nice or as special as the Sandvik.

So maybe the special editions will become less frequent and only for those who want to pay more for something special and scarce.

Yes. I also now have 2 of the 3 WBC Wolf Spirit series and when the third arrives I'd like to put up good photos of those. (Emphasis on "good" .):D

I would like a 113 too,but not for what they are asking .Its even worse at Cabelas Canada, thye want $179.99 plus tax and shipping for the alaskan guide 113 skinner.Thats over $200 for me,so not gonna happen anytime soon.

I didn't order one yet, but am hoping that they do get made...
How far off are the orders at this point?

I received an e-mail just now from Larry Oden and here is the answer:

"We did not have enough orders on the Sandvik 113 so it will not be produced."

Wonder if an Ivory Micarta handled 124 would have gotten enough orders to be produced?

Would have been convenient, since Buck was producing a 124 anyway.

Well, maybe next year.

Now THAT would be of interest to me! Especially in premium steel.

I would definitely be in for one of those.
