In keeping with the higher end nature of the August show, the food was a lot fancier than the spring show lol

And I took advantage of the drink tickets too with a little Jim Beam Bourbon lol

But of course we are here for knives, so let’s get to it! First up, James Emmons, including his ABS test knife.

21st Annual Canadian Knifemaker Guild Show

I really liked what I saw from Brian Tighe at the pre-show so I thought I would check in with him first…wow, 15 knives each one better than the next! I liked the zirconium scales as well, ultra resistant, and the acid wash finish on some of the blades looked great.

Thanks again for the Damasteel bandages Brian, I could have used them last night!

large.jpg

Once again the show was open to international knifemakers and I was super impressed with Koji Hara’s knives. As luck would have it, a fellow collector picked up a Microtech version of his Closer from Tri-City (more on them in a second) so we could do some comparison shots.

Speaking of Tri-City, Bill brought an incredible selection including some makers whose knives I have never had the chance to handle before.

Incredible opening and locking mechanism on this Stan Wilson Non-Flipper Flipper

large.jpg

Another of my show favourites was William Nease’s titanium Dao sword! It was SUPER sharp, not an easy thing to do with titanium

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

Tig, just back from filming in New Zealand (though no Milla Jovovich this time  ) liked it too.

xlarge.jpg

As I mentioned, I liked Rod Olson’s new knives at the pre-show…I especially liked the ones with Damasteel and pearl inserts

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

But for great handle materials, no one beat Denis Mura! In all the way form Italy, Denis brought some very unique knives…

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Including this one with aluminum flakes

large.jpg

Petrified onion and garlic

large.jpg

Gold flakes

large.jpg

And a very well thought out piece with a bear motif that carried through to the claw marks on the back of the knife and the sheath…another of my show favourites!

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

More from Denis, including skulls with his logo and goatee

large.jpg

large.jpg

Time to check back in with James Emmons,

My thumb still stings from the cut of his test knife, but I imagine the rope and wood shown here will be in worse shape tomorrow.

large.jpg

As an ABS Mastersmith, Christophe Derringer will oversee James’ test

large.jpg

large.jpg

Also from Quebec, Stephanie Lemelin, more great art knives..love the handle material (drat, forgot what it is)

Of course you cant mention art knives without mentioning Wolfgang Loerchener

Or his daughter, Elizabeth

first knife show I ever attended, some dude stabbed himself in the palm of his hand with his own knife! I kinda figured this type of thing was pretty standard for knife shows after that :)

I always like seeing your loads of photos. Thanks for doing it. I have cut myself in a hotel room of a knife show. Does that count?

Jon, what happens in the hotel room, stays in the hotel room.

thanks..yeah TNK usually keeps bandages at their table for this very reason...i have also cut myself at show and tells now that i think about it...hmmmm

I always love your show reports. Great eye and great camera. That's got to be a DSL or lens type with the blurry bokah.

Truth: I once sliced the @#$% out of my thumb extracting a knife out of a stiff sheath. As it started spurting blood, I grabbed the 'yellow napkin' on the table to stop it....

It was the tableholder's chamois. Boy, was he incredulous. I'll never live that down. :p

Thanks, Robert! You are looking subtle, as usual. LOL!

Thanks...yes i am using a Nikon D600 with F2.8 24-70 lens

A great report and fantastic pictures! Thanks very much for taking the time to keep us posted.

It'd be great to see that Marsh Wench live.

Looks like a very nice knife show! Thank you so much for the photo review! Your hard work is very much appreciated!

Does anyone know what the blue material is on the Wolfgang Loerchner folding dagger? It creates a wonderful contrast with the gold!

Thanks for the pictures and commentary, both now and over the years.

That is blued steel done the old fashion way, heated while covered in sand.

Wolfe did a lot of research and also had a German fighting sword done in this fashion on his table. Because it is all being done blind it is not something that comes out correctly the first time and each process done is different from any before or after.
