It’s great to see the CKG doing two shows per year again. While the August show will be held downtown again, the winter show is back at Four Points near the airport.

As is customary, I arrived early to catch up with old friends. Sure enough, Brian Tighe, Mike Mossington, Murray St. Amour, Christophe Derringer, Rod Cook, and Wolfgang Loerchner were all hanging out in the café when I arrived.

Wally Hayes arrived shortly thereafter.

large.jpg

Wally brought some great zombie spikes, including this all titanium piece

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

And one with glow in the dark handle….wow, third show in a row I find something to match my shoes…and the show hasn’t even started yet lol!

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

Another with black wrap.

large.jpg

And this beauty with silver dragon soldered on..Mike Mossington quickly snapped it up to add to his collection of Canadian makers

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

I liked Wally’s Sinn too…such great visibility..I miss mine but since the battery died I have to send it back to Germany to re-do the liquid filling. My Surefire / Luminox will just have to do in the meantime.

xlarge.jpg

xlarge.jpg

James Emmons, past winner of best show knives and on working his way toward ABS JS, had another stunning bowie with visible hamon.

large.jpg

large.jpg

Ok on to the Friends of the Guild pre-show…

Dayammm Murray White I LOVE that fur jacket! The hat and scarf are pretty cool too…I think you need shoes with Swarovski crystals like mine lol

xlarge.jpg

Lots of familiar faces

large.jpg

Brian Tighe had the only tactical on display, a Tighe Tac

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Another look at James’ fantastic bowie

large.jpg

large.jpg

Nice stag handled hunters from Mike Mossington

large.jpg

Murray St. Amour’s personal knife with ivory handle

large.jpg

large.jpg

Journeyman Smith, David Sylvester

large.jpg

large.jpg

Steve Vanderkolff once again had something with one of my favourite handle materials, mammoth’s tooth

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Nathan Knowles with his usual attention to detail…

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

…Such as the copper rings around the pins

xlarge.jpg

They had some food for us…

large.jpg

Although this wasn’t enough to satisfy our hunger so Wally Hayes, James Emmons, and I headed out to Zorro’s Steakhouse. Wow the last time I was there was with knifemaker Greg Lightfoot. Sadly my car is in the shop so I had to slum it with this 2015 C300 lol

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

I started with the Escargot

large.jpg

large.jpg

Followed by the house specialty, prime rib, Zorro’s Cut of course

large.jpg

large.jpg

Finally some crème caramel

I started the show by checking in with Wally to confirm I was keeping the zombie spike that he lent me for the pic with my shoes…lol…

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

Definitely one of the cooler pieces of the show, a homage to the movie Ninja Assassin complete with removable chain (manriki gusari)

xlarge.jpg

Here is the sheath system

large.jpg

At Wally’s table I ran into knifeman7 who was receiving his awesome forged folder from Wally, complete with red carbon fiber scales

xlarge.jpg

large.jpg

Knifeman7 was selling some of his incredible collection as well including this limited edition Ken Onion

large.jpg

large.jpg

Mike Obenauf framelock

large.jpg

large.jpg

Rod Olson with lightning strike Kevlar scales

large.jpg

Three of my favourites of the show were all at David Sylvester’s table…not only does this ABS Journeyman Smith know how to forge, he knows how to sharpen too! These knives were sharp! The chopper is modeled after knives that David uses in cutting competitions

xlarge.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Wicked forged throwing axe head

large.jpg

large.jpg

But I liked this tactical the best, I think (ok maybe tied with the axe)

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

xlarge.jpg

xlarge.jpg

Nice ambidextrous sheath design

large.jpg

More forged pieces from David

large.jpg

And from ABS Master Smith Christophe Derringer, who is always willing to share his vast knowledge

large.jpg

Next Brian Tighe..

large.jpg

This one reminded me of a gold tiger striped one Brian had a few years ago that I still regret not having bought

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

More from Brian

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Including some of his collaborations with CRKT

large.jpg

Wolfgang Loerchner had five of his knives on display

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

As well as some German military knives

large.jpg

Too bad I did not get a chance to speak with Paul Savage

large.jpg

More fine forged knives from James Emmons, who as an engineer built his own power hammer!

large.jpg

Another of my show favourites was Murray St. Amour’s filet knife with damasteel blade and handle made out of a material that combines steel (aluminum) with synthetics. The red handle uses copper instead of aluminum

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Murray also showed us a vintage Randall out of his personal collection, held here by Murray White

large.jpg

Who was busy in action shooting pics for his show review

large.jpg

Mike Mossington was set up next to Murray

large.jpg

Steve Vanderkolff had some of his new knives on display

large.jpg

As well as some of his knives owned by Russ

large.jpg

This striped Damascus pattern, which Steve had specially made, was one of the nicest knives of the show

xlarge.jpg

Paul Bold

large.jpg

I really liked his Kris

large.jpg

large.jpg

This green scale material also stood out

large.jpg

As did Paul’s first folder

large.jpg

Nathan Knowles also had a Kris design

xlarge.jpg

Along with some other very detailed knives on his table

large.jpg

I really liked the colours on this diamond wood

large.jpg

A few pieces from Murray White’s collection

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

More displays by other collectors

large.jpg

large.jpg

xlarge.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

Ok off for some great souvlaki at Zet’s with Wally and waterfowler

large.jpg

large.jpg

large.jpg

I came back late at night to say bye to my friends…most knives were packed away for the night.

large.jpg

I hope they have a great show tomorrow.

large.jpg

Cheers.

Great to see the pictures and that food, Thanks for the review as always. I liked that Paul Savage dagger in Mike Quesenberrys style.

Thanks Robert.

I just spent twenty minutes tagging along with you on a VERY enjoyable narration.

I know how long this took you, and it's always appreciated.

Your tastes are never conservative, and that's why I like these threads that much more! :D

Well done.

Coop

Thanks again for another interesting review and pics, RL.
Always appreciated.

Did you let the proprietor know there were snails on your food ?

Doug

Since I can't visit this year due to other commitments this great review makes up for it. 😊

Always a great review, Robert....loved the candids.

Did you get anything else besides the sneaker matching spike o' death?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Very nice and wish the guild show would make an appearance on the west coast for a change........

If it was here you would be in a t-shirt.....sunny and 16 celcius right now and looking at cherry blossoms out the window!!!!

Robert thank you for taking the time to do this review, I always enjoy it. Friday night was a blast and will need tone repeated at the August show. The after party with Wally was a hoot also.

The show was not heavily attended but it is always good to meet up with friends, collectors, and other makers.

James

Thanks for the great article and pictures. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the review, I have come to look forward to these. I was wondering about that watch, glad you identified it so I could look it up.

thanks all
