Hey guys, just got my forum knife today. I have a few questions, one of them being the value of the knife over time. Do you think this knife will appreciate any? The reason I ask is because it's only one of two traditional knives that I own, the other being a case medium stockman in amber jigged bone. If i carry it, it will get used, not abused, but will develop scratches. If it's more of a "value" to the person who owns it knife and it won't be anything special in the near future, i'll just carry it. Secondly, is this a semi custom knife? Custom as in, put together by hand, sharpened by hand, fit by hand, etc? I know very little about traditional knives, does this knife exhibit good marks of craftsmanship? I'm curious about this knife, i jumped onboard a few days after i bought my stockman, knowing absolutely nothing about traditionals.

Using the knife will reduce the value when the knife is sold.

BF is a large forum, and it is not unbelievble that people will want to collect the forum knives, so good examples should hold their value on that alone.

The fact that the forum knife is one of the last knives that the good people at Canal Street will produce, and it was a special pattern not found elsewhere (to my knowledge) tend to support the thought that the knife will hold it's value.

All of that said, the beauty of any knife is in carrying and using them in my opinion, not in the eventual resale value.

The forum knife is a factory made knife, not a custom, but it is hand made and of a very high quality that belies its very reasonable original price.

I'd say it's worth about $70-100 based on what they are selling for. I doubt it will ever be worth much more than that. Just use it and enjoy it if you like yours

Another way to look at it: when I'm gone several of my nephews will be using (or abusing) some really fine knives - maybe I should go ahead and enjoy the use of them before I'm no longer around use them! OH

This is a knife, not an investment. It is unlikely to ever be worth much more than it cost new. It is a knife made to be used and enjoyed. You could sell it at some point and get some of your money back, a little more if you never used it, but you are highly unlikely to get back more than it's original price.

This forum is for the discussion of traditional knives not the commercial aspects of the hobby.

Quote from the guidelines:

"In order to curtail potential abuse of membership privileges associated with the forums, questions regarding valuation of knives and collections are limited to those with a membership level which permits selling on this site. Accordingly, registered and basic members may not start or post in threads with such requests whether with the intent to sell or for informational purposes only.
Even with that caveat, the Traditional forum is probably not the proper venue for such questions and such threads may be moved to a more appropriate area of the site."

I'm closing this one.
