2016 Nat Geo Adventurer of the Year

Truly Howard! It seems she has turned each and every bump in her personal life into a ramp to help her reach a higher path. Inspirational indeed what she has done with that drive.

I looked at the end of the article about the other nominees and while a great number of them are worthy of admiration as well, I think they chose correctly when they selected.

Shavru, thanks for all the cool info! I'm showing my age, I never knew these Havalon knives ever existed. What a blessing. You may have read I worked in an Operating Room in my youth. A scalpel and a forceps, quite mistakingly arrived at my home once upon a time. The later sooner than former were utilized, go figure. The scalpels benefits were not realized until later and were skinning and hunting related. After then my favorite that serviced me well for many decades was my Puma Super Set. The Waidblatt und Jagdnicker served me well. I've skinned and butchered more bear and moose with this set that I can remember. However, due to your info I'm beginning to research the Havalons. Old dogs can learn new tricks.

glad an old dog can help another old dog keep our skills fresh. It's interesting that you spotted right off that a scalpel is exactly what the Havalons are based on. Jagdnickers sure have gorgeous balance if the one I have experience with is a good example of them. The guy who owned it loved his and I could see why but the width of the blade right behind the point didn't fit my stroke technique so I never got one for myself. I was about to buy a Havalon Baracuta then for Christmas year before last my nephews and niece went together and got me a Buck paklite set, which includes a skeletonized paklite caper and paklite boning knife both really light weight and made of satin finished S30V in a single sheath. They replaced my Buck open season folder that had been sharpened to the point the blade was thin enough most people thought it was a filleting knife LOL. You will have to keep me informed about what you decide to get and how you make the decision among so many great options.
